2009 Draft Discussion Thread

A lot of interviews from the combine are starting to come out along with some draft previews and guides. Tatar and Budish have mentioned interviews with LA, and there is some talk of Toronto moving up to the four or five spot to grab Schenn. With Leblanc having played for Luc's team (he owns Omaha Lancers), and the great character he possesses, I would assume he is in the mix also. If we end up keeping the pick, I wouldn't be surprised to see Lombardi trade down to pick up second round picks for next year and this. Here is a draft preview from todays Pipeline Show blog.

This one was poached from the scouting combine thread, and is a great read:

Teams put more emphasis - and money - into scouting

Just wondering who you guys would want with our second round pick.

How about one of Taylor Doherty, Chris Brown, Tatar, Ryan O'Reilly or maybe package up some picks for a second first.

I wouldn't mind landing carter Ashton.

I like the rough play from Doherty and Brown.

I love that we have the first round pick, and are going to get a great player.

But everytime I think about the #35 my mind instantly goes to Simmonds, Moller, and Voynov and I get very anxious in hopes that Deano can get another potential steal in the 2nd round.

When I think of the draft, I have visions of Sugar Kane and Candy Kanes.

Where do people think Tatar will go? Early 2nd Round? Is there a chance he moves into the first round?

I'm pulling for Dean to Draft either Brown or Tatar with the second.

Would be nice for Dean to go for quality of picks this year and try to aquire a second first round pick some how.

We have so many mid to late round picks which usually translates into depth/ nothing players, that I hope he moves up the boards.

I have noticed alot of talk about the Kings drafting Tatar. But what about his Slovak counterpart, Richard Panik? This guy has been "on the radar" longer than Tatar. He is actually one development year younger than Tatar. And playing next year on a stacked Windsor team with Hall, Ellis, Fowler, etc. will only help his development you would think? He didn't have the big WJC's that Tatar did... but 5 points in 7 games for a 17 year old at the WJC's is historically very good.

Richard Panik

Either one of Schenn or Kane in the first and Tatar in the second. I'd like to see them add a goalie this draft as well. Losing Rowat and, I presume, Taylor leaves Bernier, Zatkoff, and Jones. Need to add some more depth to that position.

I would have thought that Dean would have picked up a goalie at last years draft.....this year is really thin in terms of goaltending talent....but goalies take a long time to mature....so there could always be a diamond in the rough.

As a Coyotes fan, this post just kills me. We were just that close to picking in your spot. I have Schenn ranked fourth overall, and think he's the perfect fit for the Coyotes but I just know he's not getting past fifth. I also love Tatar, and he's exactly who I want with our second pick, but again, I just know he's not getting past thirty fifth. Why on earth did Viktor Tikhonov have to score that shoot-out game winner against the Ducks in the last game of the season?!?!?!?

I actually wanted Dean to either get Peter Delmas or Harri Sateri with that pick....only time will reveal whether trading that pick was a good move.

Now you know how Kings fans felt at the end of the 2006-07 season.

Payback for picking Tikhonov before we could?

This exact discussion came up with the Phoenix mods in the annual moderators draft that is almost finished. There is a huge advantage picking 5th this year vs. 6th.

If it's any consolation - I didn't have Tatar to choose from at 35 either. :\

At this point it is anybody's guess.

If all are equal (and they are all pretty close) then you look at position and then intangibles. I think a center is more valuable than a wing....so that would put Kane and Schenn at the front of the line....the biggest difference between Schenn and Kane is that Kane appears to be the superior goal scorer while Schenn probably has an edge on the defensive side of the puck. But that just represents where they are at this point of their development. That can all change in a couple years.

Personally I think:

Kane: Overall good player. Good size and fitness. Basically he's above average Schenn and above average MSP thrown together.

Schenn: Dustin Brown prototype, but could be better? Can score, can check, what else do you need from this guy?

MSP: Speed and his ability to get past the defender. I think he is pure offense.

I think MSP is the popular choice and the chance of getting him is very high because Atlanta will probably take Kane/Schenn.

Personally I want Kane. But who knows what DL is gonna pull out of his ass this time

Well, if Dean has it his way, one of these excellent players would be wearing a Ducks uniform.......
