I'm sorry for the Molson family but they SOLD this team a decade ago to an American businessman. We all know what happened to another Montreal franchise that was sold to an American interest. Thankfully, this one flourished (thanks to the 2002 run, which setup the whole ''WE LOVE THE HABS'' craziness of this decade). We were freaking lucky we didn't get a Loria.

Would anyone whine if Mike Bloomberg or Donald Trump bought the NY Rangers? Or if Mark Cuban would become owner of the Dallas Stars?

The biggest french-speaking media conglomerate in North-America would buy the most storied franchise in Hockey. Don't you think that company would do EVERYTHING in it's power to make that franchise the crown-jewel of it's empire.

I'd rather have the Habs in their hands then in the Molson (Who bailed once on us) or some Americans.

As for TVA-SPORTS, I'm sorry but RDS has a monopoly. TSN has Sportsnet, TSN-2 has The Score, competition is good. Why should 1 network run the whole Quebec Television sports scene? Another channel might give us some LHJMQ hockey, live Impact games etc...
hmmm...it was molson/coors that sold the habs the last time, not the molsons. The first is a company that owned and subsequently sold the habs the the molsons, well its the family and the members of the family itself that want to buy the habs. the molson family never owned the habs, it was their company.

And you should be scared by what pkp has said he do with the habs. Just his remarks last week when ganiey hired martin should send chills down your spine. That remark smacks of an owner who would make hockey decisions and meddle in the team's day-to-day operations. A la tampa bay and mlse, you know, the maple laughs ownership group that brought down the leafs and made them a laughing stock. And dont compare him to steinbrenner, pkp admitted he knows NOTHING about hockey so there you go.

Bronfman is a good Montrealer, he understands the significance of the Habs.

I would have no issues with him getting the team.

Does anyone know how the net worth and how much cash or liquidity each group has? I tried to find the networth of Roustan, but couldn't find anything at all. I figure that Quebecor wouldn't have much problem coming up with the money.

How much cash/liquidity would the Molsons have?

I'd hate to see a heavily leveraged group buy the Habs.

So, because he profits from the business, he's not a good owner? Good owners can't make money out of their franchise?

Now in the midst of the storied 100th year of the franchise, that the marketing dept has been hyping for years, he publicly decides to offer the team to the highest bidder. Before the end of the season, and in the middle of a hard playoff year. Is this the hallmark of a good owner? Now it has to be done as quickly as possible so Gillett can get his money fast, and it may cost us any chance of a positive offseason.
There's this thing, they call it a "depression", it's happening right now and it caused hundreds of corporations and banks to go bankrupt, maybe you didn't notice it? Don't you think it's related to Gillette selling the habs?

Or do you think that Gillette genuinely want to sell the team right now? That he's not forced to do it? That he was planing to sell the team right in the middle of the 100th from the begining?

This is people's definition of a very very good owner? Really?
No, the definition of a good owner is one who spend to the cap and stay away from hockey operation. PKP already shown he's not willing to do the latter, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him spend under the cap because it would make perfectly sense with regards to his statements regarding how he wants to manage the franchise.

Bronfman and Saputo make offer

Oh no an Anglo and an Italian owning the team!!!!!!!!!

http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/276352.html

All joking aside, this makes me excited, Joey Saputo is a great guy who's willing to spend money and expects only quality from his team.

I think these two owning the team is the best possible scenario.

I am sure that all this sale is only a making-up from Gillet . He needs to get offers for his team to show to the bank to get a financial terms renegotiation

Gillett has close to 500 mil and twice the habs value on the line here, i don't think he gives a rat's ass what you think about it.

It would be awesome for Saputo to be the new owner, in a poor economy it's good that in some way our money comes back to us.

Frrankly, considering we're talking about selling a business with a purchase price of half a billion, I think things are progressing admirably fast.

I personally think the deal is done and that the only reason we're not hearing it announced is because that darn' SC final serie is not over yet. I think I read somewhere that the NHL signifired that there was enough ownership issues with the Yotes and that more would hurt the visibility for their beloved game 7.

Yeah, I think it's because of the finals.

This should be wrapped up early next week. Hopefully along with the rest of the coaching staff too.

What striks me in Québécor's offer is that Québécor is apparently owned 45% by public money (according to Réjéan), they will use money from the FTQ fund (also almost public money) and they will also probably ask for a favorable financial support from the SGF....

So they will buy the habs mostly with our money...

Same here.

I'd rather uncle George keep the team, but if he were to sell I hope it's either these guys or the Molson brothers.

Is the guy that owns Bauer still in it as well? He seems like a good candidate also.

So what? in 10 years the FTQ will be making profits with a hometown business, it would one of the smartest moves the province has ever maid, but still, personnaly i want Saputo to win this.
