I wouldnt mind esche as a back up if they had a starter here who was a little more proven right now.

But going into the season with 2 question marks is dangerous. Who they chose to be the backup next year is a really important decision because of who they chose to be their starter, I hope he realizes that.

I'd rather convince Garth Snow to leave the Islanders management to come back to play net for us.

I will lose all faith in Homer if he does this. Esche is one of my most hated flyers and he's been in Russia. We dont need another European goalie.

im waiting for Homer to call me right now with a contract offer. Im may possibly back up Ray Emery in the NHL for the Philadelphia Flyers. Wow. Never played goalie in my life. Should be fun!

Let's get Ron Hextall back while we're at it. He's only 45, and he would save us valuable cap space.
How about we get Darren Pang as our goalie and give Mike Milbury assistant GM. Or better yet maybe Bernie still has some spark left in his game, we could give him a call .

I always like Esche personally. I dont think he was as bad as he was made out to be. Definitely a decent backup.

If this rumor has any kind of legs, it should tell everyone here just how much Holmgren & Co. think of Harding, Lehtonen, Schneider, Pavelec, etc. Not much.

This rumour doesn't just have legs, it has legs that give out massive rebounds.

Or they just don't want to pay the price for them.

Way I see it, the Flyers have two realistic options if this is legit.

Esche- 1.87 GAA and .912 save % in the KHL
Backlund- 2.56 GAA and .907 save % in the SEL

I guess you'd have to count in the styles of play between the two leagues (with the KHL being more defensive) but still, Esche wouldn't be too terrible for a back-up as I don't see us getting a Harding or Lehtonen if they want to make a serious push for Bouwmeester.

Well hold on, this is a team that 'need young goalies.' Goalies who have proven...not much, typically don't cost that much. I mean...2nd round pickish...or I'd trade Lupul at this point whereas I wouldn't in February. The price can't be too high for in the case of Harding, Luongo and Pavelec, are stuck waiting for a chance behind goalies who those teams have in their immediate future, so they could be waiting to trade them at their leisure, or to get something they need.

Schneider should backup Luongo next year, whether he plays 2 games or 42 games they need to get him out of the AHL and give themselves and opportunity to see what they have. Schneider is libel to develop bad habits dominating at a level he's proven to have conquered.

Harding...doesn't get into games. He would probably get more next year, but he's still behind a guy who is signed for 4 years, something will eventually give. He would have to get into a situation where he can platoon, and then leave it up to management to determine whether we can win with him.

Pavelec...kind of the same deal. I think he would be the easiest of the 3 to get, but I think it's the same situation with Lehtonen as it is for Luongo. Lehtonen is unproven in the playoffs as it is, and gets hurt a lot. But they probably need to see what they have before they're willing to trade Pavelec. Problem is that they have Johan Hedberg in between in a role they like him in as a de facto-alternate captain type.

Not necessarily since Esche would probably come cheaper than those you listed given that the Flyers most likely aren't going to spend more on a backup than they would for their starter (1.5 mill).

This said, no thank you to Rebound Rob.

I'd welcome Esche back to Philly, but as a Phantom not a Flyer. Rebounds are killers

To play devils advocate:

Considering most people only follow the NHL, have any of you actually seen Esche play in the last 2 years? The Flyers do have scouts. Not to mention he had a 1.87 GAA with a 0.912 Save %. Granted it's in the KHL, maybe the run in Russia did him good.

Also they'd be bringing him in as a backup, who are you expecting to back up Emery? Robert Luongo?
