Hatcher has knee-replacement surgery

Couldn't believe this wasn't posted yet, but if the mods want to merge this somewhere go ahead.

Flyers' Hatcher has knee replaced

By the Inquirer Staff

Defenseman Derian Hatcher underwent full right-knee replacement surgery June 1, the Flyers announced yesterday, and it likely signals the end of his career.

William Hozack of Rothman Institute performed the surgery at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, the team said, and Hatcher said yesterday that he felt "really good."

"It is a full knee replacement," Hatcher said. "I think they just go in there and saw some of the bone away and put the new knee in. I kind of know the process, but it is hard to explain.

"Rehab is not too bad. I am going about five times a week. For being 10 days out, I have made a ton of progress."

Will Hatcher try to be the first player to make a comeback with a brand new knee?

"I seriously doubt it," Hatcher said. "The doctor said no. So there you go."

Good. His future is probably in coaching, he will likely be around the team in training camp as a part-time coach, I think.

One more year and Rathje is off the books as well. Hopefully he doesn't try another comeback.

I thought I read somewhere he was already hired as a player development coach or something along those lines.

I also only read about it with my Google Reader subscription to philly.com just now. It is kind of a semi-surprise. It is certainly not surprising that his knee is totally ****ed up, but a replacement is kind of surprising, especially since he hasn't played for a year.

Best of luck to him in Rehab.

I think the reason he waited so long was in hope something miraculous would happen where he could come back and play, but it didn't work out. He doesn't want to leave here, so it was time.

I don't think he deserved the bad wrap he got around here at times the last 2 years.

Have they set a date for when the bolts will be placed in his neck?

i'm surprised they're not already there.

i'm glad hatch is probably sticking around philly. the guy is great, even if his last seasons were underwhelming. he'd be a great presence for our developing defensemen.

I shouldn't visit this thread anymore. I already had surgery on both my knees when I was 19 and I naturally developed a certain incapability to stomach tales or pictures of knee injuries.

If anybody has played Assassin's Creed, I almost puked at the scene in the "hospital".

I tend to agree, and there were many times this past season when I wished we had a healthy (and nasty) Hatcher on patrol. I'm glad he'll continue to be a part of the organization.

I feel his pain. Hopefully he makes a full recovery and is able to enjoy the day to day things life has to offer.
