Roster Freeze

When is the roster freeze no longer in effect?

Or is it not in effect anymore?

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the roster freeze is only in place for playoff teams anyways. I always assumed that there were no trades during the playoffs because of a surplus of sellers and all the buyers rosters being frozen. But now at least someone will clarify.

Why would their be a trade deadline then though?

So teams that aren't going to make the playoffs don't make deals the day before the end of the season to send their pending UFA to playoff teams. If the rosters are not frozen for non-playoffs teams having the teams still playing frozen still accomplishes that. That said I've written a lot when I'm not sure at all.

There is no roster freeze, except for example, around Christmas.

Teams are allowed to trade during the playoffs, but traded players can't play for their teams in the playoffs, so there's really no point.

There is also the unwritten rule that GMs tend to follow during the playoffs, in that they don't make deals that will steal away the spotlight. That is why the Pronger to LA rumour didn't go away even after it was denied by both GMs. A lot of people thought that it was just the GMs playing it cool until after the playoffs, then they would announce the trade.

Too bad Dany Heatley didn't get that memo as well.
