Overpayment indeed.

$3,500,000 a season is more fair market value.

And you still don't get it either. I did say 'unconfirmed report' - yet you still had to post stuff like that, despite the speculation tag. Clue, please.

Carlos also had been pretty good for the last month in terms of signings and rumors, so I am posting it on. If you don't like it, don't post.

Don't get what? Bleacher Report is just as reliable as the crap Eklund puts out.

Played well last year. Still worth the money he's paid for a winning club as a support piece.

Not doubting you...just asking fdor the link, if you have it.

This rule is so muddled, I would love to have it in plain English, if possible.

Thanks

If a player is 35+ yo when he signs a multi-year SPC (as of June 30 before the League Year in which the contract starts), then starting in the second year of the contract, he counts against the cap "regardless of whether, or where, the Player is playing" - except that if he is playing in the AHL his cap hit is reduced by $100K.

Nice signing if it's true. A bit expensive but I think most can handle it. Blake looked great last season and was a solid contributor. He played better hockey last season than he did in his second stint with the Kings a few seasons ago number-wise. I'm glad to see him still playing for the next two seasons for the Sharks if it's a true signing.

Blake put up great numbers in the regular season. In the playoffs he was their second leading scorer and still provided a decent physical game. It may be an overpayment, but Erhoff and Vlasic clearly werent cutting it in the post season and they definately need another top 4 guy. For a guy who brings as much offense as Blake it's tough to get them under 4M.

Vlasic may not have had the best post-season, but Ehrhoff was the best Sharks defenseman in the playoffs. Blake may have been scoring, but his defensive play left a lot to be desired.

I thought Mckellan or however you spell it used Blake properly. If given the top tough defensive minutes Blake would've been horrible, but he wasnt used against Getzlaf's line. Even at this age he matches up fine verse the majority of second lines.

Blake wasn't horrible defensively, but his lack of mobility definitely showed, as he was forced to take a lot of hooking, holding, and similar penalties. Vlasic actually had to cover for Blake on the defensive side fairly regularly, which may have been one of the reasons Vlasic struggled so much, along with the fact that Vlasic was just out-muscled.

Blake definitely helped on the offensive side of thing, and from appearances with the leadership portion, but I honestly would not have paid him more than $2.5 million a season. If he wanted more, he could get it elsewhere. He just solidified an impression that he is now pretty much a one-dimensional player now, and I would be perfectly happy if he is not signed (assuming this rumor is false) and the Sharks go with Joslin next year.

Sharks beat writer shoots down the rumor.

That rumored two-year, $9 million deal for Rob Blake? No way. That pursuit of goalie Gustavsson? Well, yes

Posted by David Pollak on June 15th, 2009 at 6:26 pm | Categorized as Hockey, NHL, Sharks, Sports

Normally, I don’t run every Internet rumor past my Sharks’ sources. I don’t want to waste my time or theirs.

But, hey, Monday was a rare off-season work day for me. And I already was scheduled to talk with a few folks even before the Todd Richards story broke. So I floated that BleacherReport posting about a two-year, $9 million deal for Rob Blake past them.

The consensus response: Absolute nonsense.

Rob Blake is 39, but he made it clear right after the Sharks were eliminated in Anaheim that he wanted to come back for another go-round. And every indication is that the Sharks would like that, too, and are doing what they can to make it happen.

But do not expect it to be a multi-year deal. (Blake is over 35 and that means his 2010-11 salary would count against the cap even if he were injured and unable to play). And my educated guess is the payroll hit won’t be close to $4.5 million.
