News Report from dallas.bizjournals.com:

During the next 30 to 60 days, the Texas Tornado amateur hockey team will name staff members for the next season and begin working toward a plan to recover after a dark season.

The Tornado, which plays in the Deja Blue Arena of the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Frisco, has been displaced from its home ice as the arena is being expanded. Instead of finding a temporary home for the season, the team went dark.

“It would have been a very bad year financially, and it wouldn’t have been good for the team,” said Texas Tornado owner Kirby Schlegel. “And we didn’t want to downgrade the product by playing in a high school rink or small facility where no fans could be there.”

The team notified its players ahead of the $39 million arena expansion, which began in early summer and is expected to finish in May or June, said Randy Locey, executive vice president of business operations for the Dallas Stars.

Players were allowed to sign with one of the other 17 teams in the North American Hockey League. Three staff members have been kept in place for planning, Schlegel said. And sponsors weren’t charged for the season.

“There’s been some perception that the team won’t be here any more,” Schlegel said. “We’ve got a strong fan base up there.”

Schlegel said sponsors J.C. Penney Co. and Park Place Dealerships have long-term deals with the Tornado. Not all sponsors have been approached for renewals.

In the next couple months, Schlegel said he’ll announce a new head coach and general manager, and hire seven new full-time sales employees to focus on marketing for the 2009-2010 season, which will start in late September or early October.

“If you’re going to go dark for a year, this would be the reason why,” said Mark Frankenfeld, commissioner of the NAHL.

Frankenfeld noted the Texas Tornado’s success on the ice — winning the championship in 2004, 2005 and 2006 — and said the team could face a tough time re-recruiting its strong players.

“There’s a lot of unanswered questions with the economy,” he said. “The benefit for them is that they do already have a pretty good base of corporate partners and a very good base of season ticket sales. I almost feel like it won’t affect them.”

Individual ticket prices range from $9 to about $40.

The stadium expansion is being overseen by the Dallas Stars Hockey Club and the City of Frisco, which own the building.

The arena was a 3,500-seat fixed bowl, built in 2003, for minor-league hockey, Locey said. But in the years since it opened, other groups have inquired about leasing the facility.

When the expansion is completed, there will be about 6,000 seats. The plans also include additional suites, an enhanced promenade, new video boards and 1,000 new parking spaces.

The design was done by Dallas-based HKS architects. Balfour Beatty, whose U.S. construction division is located in Dallas, is the general contractor.

Looks like they will be getting a D-League team. Heard it from WFAA Channel 8 in Dallas. Interesting decision.
