Rfa Compinsation (sny Rangers Blog)

With July 1st just around the corner I thought it was time to give a refresher course on the compensation for restricted free agent signings.

According to NHLSCAP the compensation for last seasonís RFAís was:

Amount

Compensation Due

$863,156 or less

None

$863,156 - $1,307,811

3rd round pick

$1,307,811 - $2,615,623

2nd round pick

$2,615,623 - $3,923,434

1st and 3rd round pick

$3,923,434 - $5,231,246

1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick

$5,231,246 - $6,539,061

Two 1stís, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick

$6,539,061 or more

Four 1st round picks

The NHL will release official numbers in the coming weeks but with the salary cap expected to stay clos

ok.... Lets see hypotheticaly what would happen if all our RFA's left...( my assumptions for the amount i think they will get offered)

Nik Zherdev-(3.0-3.5)- 1st and 3rd round pick

Brandon Dubinsky(2-2.7)- 2nd round pick... might get higher sheet so could be 1st and 3rd

Ryan Callahan(2-2.7)- 2nd round pick... same as dubinsky might be 1st and 3rd

Freddy Sjostrom( 900,000-1 mil)- 3rd round pick

Lauri Korpikoski( 1 mil)-3rd round pick...

so if what i said would be true the most we can get would be 3 first rounders and 4 3rd rounders

I would sign all of them unless there is a way to get a 1st and 3rd rounder next season depending on the team. If the team is going to have a relatively high pick next year then I take it. If it is a team like Detroit then I match.

Guarentee all will be resigned. You can quote me on that. Zherdev is the only one who i'm 80% sure of. The rest... 100% will be back.

It's obvious Torts loves him, but I'm with you, not sold that Sjo will be back.

Yea, it doest make sense to lose a guy for a 3rd round pick who is still young and is already an NHLer. Most 3rd rounders dont turn out to be NHLers so I would keep Sjostrom unless it was more than that.

Your salary estimates for Callahan and Dubinsky are high. They will come in between 1.6 and 1.8. See -- Tyutin and Girardi.

I guarentee that a team like San Jose or Atlanta or any other team would offer at least 2.3 for cally and dubinsky... These young guns dont come around often...

you really think both will make 600,000-800,000 more then voros???

Just because Voros has an atrocious contract doesn't mean that it should be used as a measuring stick.

it wouldn't be 4 first round picks next year.

It would be an extra first round pick each of the next 4 years.

Say ATL signed Zherdev for 8 mil per season. We would then get ATL's first round pick for the next 4 seasons.

IMO The Rangers will have to choose between Antro and Zerdev.

If thats the case I would put money on them keeping Antro because he fits into what Torts wants to do here. He needs a big man on this team.

It might not be the best thing to do because Antro will be more expensive on the open market, with a longer term most likely. The Rangers might welcome an offer sheet to Zherdev if they are serious about Antropov.

Other teams can't offer them anything until July 1st, so if we get them locked up before then, it doesn't matter what other teams might have given them.

And Voros was an UFA. 1 million isn't really that much anyway, when the minimum salary is 500k. Hell, Sjostrom made 840k last year. Dubi and Cally would be getting double what he made last year, which I think is reasonable.

if Sjo isn't brought back i'd assume its not due to money or the compensation draft picks...they would probablly let him go to open a potential 3rd line spot to a prospect to get some ice. I love Sjo but he wont mkae/break this team by any means

I can't see them letting him go for nothing. They will qualify him and then sign or trade him.

Yup.

Especially when you consider we gave up assets for him.

Makes no sense to just let him go. He's still in his 20's, and his work ethic alone is well worth the sub-1M contract he'll fetch.

He's a very movable player too.

If I had to pick between one of the two, I'd rather see Antro sporting a blueshirt next season. I really like how he looked here.

Some people here are wary about him, which is understandable. But overall, I think he suits this team much better than Zherdev.

If I were GM, neither would be Rangers next season though. Antro will cost too much.... And I think Zherdev can be used to acquire a player that's a better fit for this team.

so if what i said would be true the most we can get would be 3 first rounders and 4 3rd rounders

Nikolai Zherdev- he will be qualified at 3.25, and i have a feeling he will be back next season.
Brandon Dubinsky- Brandon is going to be a Ranger, he will not leave and i believe Sather will give him a contract between 1.5-2 million. It would be a 2-3 year deal.
Ryan Callahan- Same as Brandon Dubinsky.
Lauri Korpikoski- He will not see a significant raise, he will make anywhere between 1-1.25 million.
Fred Sjostrom- He will take a paycut to play here under torts because torts loves him and Sjostrom enjoys new york.

REMEMBER! The players themselves have to ACTUALLY SIGN THE OFFER SHEET!, if they dont sign it then they dont have a chance to get that SIGNIFICANT pay increase. They arent players like Thomas Vanek or Jeff Carter. They have a chance to be very good players but lets not overshoot and come up empty. i would rather underestimate them and be proved wrong.

The current expected RFA compensation table for 2008-09 is:

Amount
Compensation Due

$863,156 or less
None

$863,156 - $1,307,811
3rd round pick

$1,307,811 - $2,615,623
2nd round pick

$2,615,623 - $3,923,434
1st and 3rd round pick

$3,923,434 - $5,231,246
1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick

$5,231,246 - $6,539,061
Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick

$6,539,061 or more
Four 1st round picks
The cap is expected to be about the same this year as last year, so the compensation will likely be about the same as well.

You're the second person on this board to say this exact same thing. You do realize that Sjo is an RFA who made $840,000.00 last year and in order for him to remain an RFA he must be qualified at 105% of his previous year's salary. Therefore unless you plan to not qualify him hoping that because he "loves NY so much" and doesn't care about money that he decides to sign as a UFA with NY for a lower salary then Sjo is all but guaranteed a raise for this coming season.
