JJ stays in LA, but LA wants a veteran defenseman to groom him

So suppose that JJ decides to stay in LA, and the Kings decide to go out and get a veteran defenseman to help groom him...

Phoenix has Jovanovski, who is decent, obviously not the best out there. Phoenix also wouldn't be stupid to try and move up to #5 and grab Schenn (depending on if Atlanta takes him or Colorado)

So maybe you propose a trade like

Los Angeles:
5th overall pick

Phoenix
Ed Jovanovski
6th overall pick

What does Phoenix need to add to make this plausible?
I know not too long ago the Coyotes did ask Jovo for a list of teams he would waive his NMC to go to. Plus this is only speculation.

Thoughts?

I think that's why we have Sean O'Donnell. Besides Johnson should be able to get rid of the training wheels by now.

Well Jovanovski's contract is, to say the least, not very cap-friendly, so if the Coyotes are looking for someone at the 5th pick, they should go for this deal ASAP

So this isn't really speculation, is it?

If Schneider doesn`t retire this year, maybe Kings could get him. He would come much at a much cheaper price than Ohlund.

I know there is not way to get him, but i think Niklas Kronwall would be a good option. Though getting Pronger is easier

Nobody wants Jovo's $6 million cap hit for the 2010/11 season.

Gonchar for the 5th overall. If he doesn't re-sign, LA gets Pittsburgh's 1st in 2010.

While there probably are better options out there, O'Donnel is cheap, has a rep with the team now and the organization as a whole, so I see no need to get someone else to mentor JJ. A full season next to OD will do WONDERS for JJ.

If the Kings need any help on D, it is another top 4 dman, someone to play ~18 minutes.

Right now we have

Doughty-Drewiske
Greene-Quincey
O'Donnel-JJ
Harrold/Hickey/Voynov

Not a whole lot of experience. I really like Drewiske, he played remarkably well late in the season playing top pairing minutes with Doughty, but he'll probably be better off as a 6/7 guy when it comes down to the grind of the season.

I think if the Kings go add anyone to the dcore (assuming we keep Johnson), it should be a UFA like Boynton.

I will be pretty annoyed if the Kings use assets to get a dman. For me, when it comes to trades its a top 6 forward or bust.

What would Phoenix have to add?!?!? We're giving up our second best defenseman to move up one spot? Our ONLY legitimate powerplay weapon to move up ONE spot?

By the way, you do know there is a salary cap floor, right? If your plan is to sign some big ticket UFA with the cleared up cap space, you can almost certainly forget that for two reasons. One, no big ticket UFA would have any interest in coming to this mess. Crappy team, high drama, totally unstable environment. No good. Two, Jovo only has two years left on his deal. Those big ticket UFAs are going to be wanting four, five, and six year deals. I don't think prospective owners are going to be too into that.

Also, I heard an interview with Don Maloney today in which he said that he would not trade up, unless it was into the top two. He said he wouldn't count on that happening, so it was either pick at six(more likely), or trade down(less likely). He did express interest in moving down in the second, in hopes of getting a third, as he expects a goalie he likes to be available in the third, and we currently do not have a pick in that round(it went to Calgary in the Jokinen deal). He said something to the effect that trading up to spots three through five didn't make any sense or that there wouldn't be a point to it, or something like that. In any event, he obviously had his mind made up about it.

forget all this nonsense about trading for a D, there are some very viable options on the open market which will cost nothing but cash... as someone already mentioned him Mathias Ohlund would be the perfect mentor for JJ

Pronger+JJ would be like the bash brothers....if one of the bash brothers was twice as old as the other.

I would not want to be on the ice at the same time as that pairing.
