SPHL looking at expansion, relocation of franchises

http://www.oursportscentral.com/serv...es/?id=3800039

Looking to expand to Pensacola, FL. Looking to possibly relocate Twin City Cyclones.

Quote:
"It is still premature to provide more specific detail however, be assured it is the intention of our Board of Governors that the SPHL will expand where and when the right opportunities exist within our geographical footprint.

I came across this article involving Pensacola and Tim Kerr:

http://www.pnj.com/article/20090531/...1/-1/NEWSFRONT

Quote:
The Pensacola Ice Flyers will hit the ice in five months ... probably.

Just 10 days after team owner Tim Kerr said he would likely delay the return of hockey for a year, he said he has reached an agreement with Escambia County that could put the team in play for the start of the Southern Professional Hockey League season in October.

But a previously announced condition imposed by the Escambia County Commission during Kerr's negotiations in early May still remains in place: The team must sell 1,250 season tickets before Aug. 13 in order to start playing this fall rather than next.

So, if enough tickets are sold, the Ice Flyers will embark on a 56-game schedule, including 28 home games, as a new member of the SPHL.

in if they sell the season tickets. Everyone seems to over look that fact and just say Pensacola is automatically in.

They wouldn't print it in the Pensacola paper that they're not in, so it's a safe bet unless Escambia County backs out.

Whenever the Pensacola Ice Flyers make their debut, hockey fans will see a familiar sight.

The team plans on wearing navy and gold uniforms.

Team owner Tim Kerr said the team has decided to keep the same color scheme used by the Pensacola Ice Pilots during their professional hockey tenure at the Pensacola Civic Center.

"We want the team to be new and get a fresh start, but we wanted to keep this tradition alive," Kerr said. "We want to continue to honor the Navy's presence in Pensacola and give the fans what they want. People wanted to see the same colors."

What's new, however, will be the team's logo.

And while the Philadelphia Flyers have given permission to Kerr to use their name, Kerr is looking for a new logo to set the Ice Flyers apart.

The Philadelphia Flyers' ownership have informed Kerr to make sure the logo is unique and doesn't resemble the NHL team's logo. Naturally, registered trademark and copyright laws apply.

Kerr is turning to the Pensacola fans for help in the design.

Twelve months from now when Mike Murray begins his second year as chairman of the Southern Professional Hockey League Board of Governors, the Knoxville Ice Bears general manager expects to be presiding more than 10 teams instead of seven.

Based on three newcomers - the Pensacola Ice Flyers, Louisiana IceGators and Mississippi Surge - Murray believes the seven-team league, which will begin its sixth season in October, will grow and gain respect in the pro hockey world.

Murray, who succeeded Columbus coach Jerome Bechard and has an option for a third year, is responsible for working with commissioner Jim Combs to resolve matters that crop up within the league.
