If I'm Burke I take the deal then simply buyout Sopel or send him to the AHL.
I'd be fine with sending him to the AHL, but in no way should we be buying any players out again for a long while. We already have $1-million tied up in Tucker's buy-out for the next 5 seasons, as well as $733k in Raycroft for next season, we don't need to have that much tied up in dead salary.
I would take Skille from Chicago not Sopel though. We really don't need d-men unless Kaberle and Kubina are dealt. But I'm sure that Stralman, Harrison, or any of the others would do just as well and cheaper than Sopel.
Also, the Isles have a big forward prospect in Joensuu. He's probably going to spend a 2nd yr at Bridgeport, but they like him a lot.
Joensuu doesn't have Skille's wheels, so I don't really see that as a reason to avoid Skille. I also think Skille's skillset (that feels stupid to type) would be a good match on a line with Bailey. Isles should have some interest in Skille, IMO, he seems like he could be a classic late bloomer to me.
However, I agree, Isles aren't taking back Sopel. He sulked the last time he was here, hard to imagine him not doing it again, can't see why we'd want that in the lockerroom and Skille's too risky to overcome Sopel's negative value. Something like Weight at the deadline for Skille makes more sense to me.
