Because he was a "locker room cancer" apparently and wanted a little more money then people thought he should get if i remember correctly.

I always wanted to give him a chance, some posters did as well...most didnt, and neither did Sather of course.

Calling a 21 year old a cancer is ridiculous. People grow up and mature. Its not like we were talking about a 31 year old.

But thats longer here or there....all in the past...moved from that

He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way in his short try out here.

From people I talk to, there are still some people he rubs the wrong way.

We got a 2nd as compensation for not signing him. That was 2004 so we had four 2nd rounders that year: Olver, Byers, Graham, Dubinsky. Olver was our own 2nd rounder. Graham's pick was part of the Kovalev trade, and Byers was in the Nedved/Edmonton package so I would have to say we "traded" Umberger for... Dubinsky? Is that right? Dang. Sweet!

He's been that way since he was in the NCAA.

I don't think any of his former teammates liked him at all.

He's a real *********, apparently.

He also has a tendency to get KTFO.

I think there's something about him that draws interest.

He's got good size, good skills, and does a little bit of everything. Still you can't help but feel he's capable of a bit more.

He's 26 years old and technically with his fourth organization. Some people just don't like him apparently. I've never met him, so I can't say one way or the other. But once you get that kind of reputation, you're always going to have to prove yourself, and continue to put up points.

I wasn't worried then that the Rangers didn't sign him and it still doesn't bother me.

The Rangers traded the pick to Calgary to move up in the first round to select Lauri Korpikoski

Exactly. He is not a difference maker and is a lockerroom cancer.

No he isn't. He is just really intense and serious. He is very hard on himself and hates losing.

He is far from a 'locker room cancer' but you guys just keep telling yourselves that so you feel better about not having him.

Btw, he scored 26 goals last year.

You can ask any of his former teammates from the Wolfpack to Ohio State.

I don't just blabber out of my ass. I know a lot of people in and out of the NCAA, bud. Umberger was seen as an entitled little punk who cared more about himself than anyone else.

Why do you think the Wolfpack jumped the guy the first time he played them? Giroux wanted to beat him into a bloody pulp.

But keep acting as if you know anything. It's fun to watch you be a massive Blue Jackets homer.

How about talking to his current teammates, and the guys he played with in Philly--THEN apply your ridiculous 'cancer' assessment to him.

You are talking about stuff that happend what? 6 years ago? I got it. Yeah, there is no chance for a kid to grow up.

For the record, I have met RJ several times, and have seen him around his teammates. He is a nice, quiet, serious guy who only wants to play good hockey. So...um...yeah--keep talking about what you KNOW to be true about a guy....

He is such a cancer, he will be wearing an 'A' next year...

Hey, maybe he FINALLY got it right. But every other place he's played in he's left a bad taste in their mouths.

The guy needed a serious wake-up call.

Maybe it came when Brian Campbell almost killed him and his face whited out. I guess when you see your life flash before your eyes, you tend to not act like a fool anymore afterwards.

He was well liked in Philly as well as in Columbus.

I would take what some jealous little twerps on his former teams would have to say with a large grain of salt.

I think he wanted close a million dollars and Sather wasn't willing to give him that.
They did get a second round pick for him not signing though

And three in four playoff games. Couple that with his playoff performance from the year before, and the kid may be shaping up to be another Glenn Anderson.

Not true in the case of Philly. There was never a whisper that his teammates didn't like him or that he irritated them.

The Flyers sign Umberger at no cost, then move him and a 4th to the Jackets for a 1st (Sbisa) and 3rd (Bourdon). Wish we had asset management like that.

I thought it was just over (like $1.1M), but I may be misremembering that.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind that argument so much if Sather didn't hand out bad contracts to old players who were a fraction of their former selves. My God, if you're going to overpay, at least spend it on youth that has a future and may bring you something in return (as Umberger eventually did for the Flyers).

Oh yea, I remember this. Great asset management to worry about your career AHL'ers (Giroux) rather than someone who was clearly going to be a good NHL player. As you all know, Giroux is not even with us anymore.

Personally, I think his attitude was overblown because we had him when we were just fresh from licking our wounds from those terrible days of running a country club full of guys who didn't care. At the time, the majority of our draft picks were devoid of skill but no shortage of great character and hard work. We weren't really interested in skilled guys with question marks. Even at the NHL level, we began icing guys like Ortmeyer, Moore, Betts, etc instead of Holik, Nedved, Lindros..

Which IMO is where we went wrong with Umberger.
