Report: Thrashers Hire Rick Dudley As Associate GM

On Craig Custance's blog on the Sporting News website, he is reporting that according to sources in the NHL, the Thrashers have hired Blackhawks Assistant GM Rick Dudley to be Associate GM for the Thrashers.

Thrashers bolster front office with Dudley hire

Dudley isn't replacing Waddell (boo!) and is a Waddell hire, but I would guess that perhaps Waddell may be in line for a larger role within Atlanta Spirit. Or maybe he knows that his butt is on the line, and having someone lined up as a replacement isn't a bad idea. It's definitely a smart move in my opinion.

First off, I love your avatar. Anytime I'm in Atlanta airport I get a 420 from sweet water.

I don't know if his ways have changed. By all accounts, Dudley did some good things in Chicago, but in his time with Florida he had an itchy trigger finger and would trade any player for a prospect or pick.

He also used to love big defensemen, so Valabik will be a favorite of his. Unfortunately the ones he liked were also really slow.

This is one thing I will agree with Rattrick with. Get ready to see a bunch of 6'7ish defensemen brought to camp, doesn't matter if they have talent or not.

Assuming that he hasn't changed his ways post old NHL. By all accounts, he has done good things in Chicago, so it's very possible that he has realized a different way of doing things.

You mean like Pauli Levokari and Ivan Majesky?

Was it Majesky we picked up from them for a 2nd rounder?

I do not like this move for a couple of reasons:

He is not the most impressive candidate out there

He is good friends with DW, which I think is the last thing we need in the org.(Am I right on this, I had thought it was Dudley he was friends with and actually gave him a little role with the Thrashers after he was fired by Florida)

Mayesky was actually the best he ever drafted. Others:

Martin Biron
Kristian Kudroc
Bradislav Mezei

AKA "The Redwood Trio" or something along those lines. They were about as effective as a tree.

That won't be a big stretch for the org. Waddell always drafts a goalie and a big defenseman.

What does this hire really mean? How will the GMing duties get divided? How much input will he have on personnel decisions?

I'm not overly impressed with his resume, but maybe he's had more input into Chicago's roster than we know.

From what I know of Dudley, this looks to be a good move. Guess it all depends on how much input he will have.

But I gotta say that I'm all in favor of bringing in as many "hockey smart" guys as possible. That's my view of Dudley in the recent past, so I'm for it.

Any addition to Waddell's GM position is welcome news, especially a guy that has done well in rebuilding a team recently

In the IHL's 1992-93 season DW was the San Diego GM. Dudley was the head coach and John Anderson was a high scoring, top five forward on the team. The Gull's won 62 games that year, which stood as a record in pro hockey for a few years before the Red Wings surpassed it.

That's a pretty interesting story. Hopefully, with everyone's promotion (I'm expecting/dreaming Waddell get's "promoted") the same success can be replicated (albeit with a happier ending, i.e. cup, not losing in the finals).
