This is Michael Hoffman from the Washington Capitals Examiner, click here if you want to check out my interview with Ted Leonsis, if you read it there are some good and bad things in my mind.
1. Ted sounds like he doesn't want the Caps to be big players in free agency, maybe he is just hiding his hand, but I don't think all our help can or should come from the minors. Alzner & Co. are great but we have some pretty big holes, especially at center.
2. I do like the fact that Leonsis said that the team wants to build on home grown players and not overly rely on free agency. That might seem counter-intuitive to what I said before, but it seems like Leonsis is out of the game of trying to sign over the hill veterans to long-term contracts, I like that a lot.
Anyways like I said you can check out the interview by clicking here. And here's to a fast off-season.
The Caps have all the star level players they can afford for the foreseeable future. Therefore they can not be big players in free agency. There is no chance they can afford either the salary or the term that top free agents require.
This does not mean they can not score a player they need, it just means it has to be done one a one year contract.
