Can we stop overvaluing draft picks?

Also, I agree drafting is important: But there's a MASSIVE difference between trading a pick for a superstar and a 4th line grinder like they used to.

Umm, the Pens just won the cup and they did it without trading a top 5 pick for a guy like Heatley. The Hawks made it to the WCF this year without trading away any elite prospects or top 5 picks too. If you want to truly tank for 5 straight years to get 5 lottery picks then you to can draft enough elite "can't miss" talent that will be on par with the Heatleys of the NHL.

Interesting that I'm short-sighted for posting what we've heard from the front office.

Regarding Heatley, I think if he was available because Ottawa wanted to change their core, rather than because he demanded a trade, there would be more interest. DL is a character first guy and he doesn't seem high on Heatley's character. Is the 5th worth trading for a star in general, obviously yes but circumstances may dictate differently.

If it was Kovy, and chill Atl fans I'm not saying he is or should be available, you would be hard pressed to find a Kings fan that wouldn't toss that 5th and a bunch more in the pot to try and get him.

Nah, you're not short-sighted for posting what your head office said.

Maybe for believing them . Honestly, it's posturing on their part. Nothing more. The L.A. Kings are still in discussions to get Heatley, so we know there's more to the story there.

Btw - to the Pens comment from the other poster - the Pens made several trades to acquire superstars. They gave up four players in the Hossa deal, they gave up Whitney to acquire Kunitz, they also made some other deals. They DID make trades to get star/superstar players.

No, it isn't. These picks aren't "picks." They are young players. Should Toronto trade Luke Schenn (last year's no. 5) for Heatley? It's about value. It's not just about the name and experience.
