New player wrist shot

New player wrist shot

I am a fairly new player. I have a problem with my shot, every time I take a wrist shot my left elbow (I am right handed) hits me around the ribs or in the side. How can this be fixed? Is there a way I could change my shot so it doesn't do this?

I don't want to sound like a smartass, but all you really have to do is use your wrist more.

Here's a pretty good video explaining the movement in the wrist.

Maybe you are following through wrong, or you're holding your stick improperly?

Your left arm (bottom arm since you are a righty) should be bent. When you shoot, open it away from you (basically forward, but you also have to be careful where you aim so your shots arenít going straight into the goalie.) Also the wrist on your bottom hand should be open when you are holding the stick.

Okay, I think it is a mix of both. I need to snap my wrist more and my follow through is wrong. I will try this out soon and get back to you guys. Thanks!
(After re-reading my post they sound like the same thing, snapping my wrist and follow through, are they the same?)

the snap of the wrist is what gives the shot lift, the follow through is where your arm goes after the shot.

Okay, I think it was a mix of both follow through and not snapping my wrist enough. I am still getting use to it thank you though guys!

Do it 50,000 times with proper technique, then you might be good at it.

You want to have your hands out in front of you and your arms somewhat outstretched, and when you bring the puck across your body, try rotating your upper body at the waist. That will get your elbow away from your body.

Here's some advice I copied from a Bobby Hull Jr blog:

Hand Positioning - top hand forms a V on the top of the knob; bottom hand "pad" of palm against the back of the shaft.

Puck Positioning - sweep shots start from behind the back leg; slap/snap shots start from the front toe.

Blade Positioning - sweep shots start from back third of the blade; snap shot from 3" back of the toe; slap shot from center of blade.

Weight Transfer - get the potential energy generated down through your arms, into the shaft of the stick, through the blade and into the puck.

Follow Through - snap wrists in an aggressive fashion as the puck is released; point the toe of the stick towards the intended target.

Shoot to Score - as soon as you know the puck is coming your way you must decide where the shot will go so that once it hits your stick all you have to do is release the shot to the target; train your mind to focus on open holes at which to shoot.

Wrist shots are slow and take too much time to get off... do some video searches on "snapshots".

A lot of new players and especially guys who just play ball hockey, don't understand the difference between a snap shot and a wrist shot.

I barely ever use a wrist shot unless I am directly in front of the net and need to lift the puck.

A snap shot is much faster than a wrist shot and once you perfect it, you can do a snap shot mid-stride and eat goalies alive.

Most teachers though would have you learn the wrist shot first to get the mechanics down before the snap shot. Learn the weight transfer, wrist snap, stick flexing, and follow through. Then you can do a snap shot much better and easier.

Yes, very true. Wrist shot and slapshot must be learned first. Then snap and backhand, because they derive, in part or in whole, from the first two.

When you take that wrist shot, the top hand and arms need to move to full extension. This is going to allow the leverage in the fulcrum to work. Ok, what's a fulcrum? It like a teeter-tauter at your local play ground. The center point is the fulcrum of the teeter-tauter...get it?

Well, the bottom hand is the fulcrum of the stick. If you leave the top hand next to your body, you change the leverage of the fulcrum to be at the top instead of at the middle where it should be. Thus, you will have a weak shot.

However, if you move the top hand away from your body during the follow through and you add pressure on the shaft with the bottom hand to make the flex in your stick work for you, at the point when the bottom hand is almost at full extension as well, pull the top top hand back towards your body, while leaving the bottom hand extended.

This action will cause the bottom hand to act like the fulcrum and the shot will use the maximum amount of leverage behind the shot.

Now, don't forget to roll your wrist and point to the target with the tip of your blade. Where ever you point this blade, the puck is sure to go there.
