Yay for our last year's 4th line playing 3rd line! Damn.. what ever happened there lol. So.. we have about 4.2 mil to fill out 2 more 4th line guys, a 7th d-man, and a backup.
sweet....
Oh and I like how you put Timonen and Pronger together. I really dont think Homer is going to put our newly acquired 6.23 mil defender on the 2nd pairing and have Coburn on the first. If people didnt see last year, Stevens liked the Coburn/carle pairing
The Pronger acquisition gives us some real flexibility when it comes to arranging our top-4 on defense:
Pronger-Coburn
Timonen-Parent
Personally, I want Coburn paired with Pronger. Remember how Braydon benefited with Hatcher as his defensive partner? Pronger should be an even better mentor. It's not like I'd be disappointed if Pronger is paired with Parent and Timonen with Coburn, either. And what I like even more: late in games, when we really need to shut a team down or press for a goal, Stevens can put Pronger and Timonen out there together (like Bylsma did with Crosby and Malkin). Hell, maybe Stevens even makes that the permanent first pairing and plays them 25+ minutes per game. There are a lot of options with which to experiment. Lastly, if Carle is kept, he too would look real good paired alongside Pronger or Timonen (if, for example, the team for some reason decides it doesn't want Parent in the top-4).
As for our forwards... the other shoe has to drop, now that the trade for Pronger has been made. I don't think JVR is ready to step into the lineup, and he'd be much better off playing top-6 minutes with the Phantoms than bottom-6 minutes with the Flyers. That said, if we don't re-sign Knuble, our top-6, as presently constructed, is Richards, Gagne, Briere, Hartnell, Carter, and Giroux. Our current bottom-6 is Carcillo, Powe, Asham, Ross, Cote, and Nodl. Yikes. Like I said, another move MUST be forthcoming, whether it's a trade or FA signing, because something has to be done to dramatically improve the depth in our bottom-6.

Ideally that is our fourth line, I was just throwing it out there for salary purposes. I would definitely split up Pronger and Timonen. At the very least, you want them split up when you're facing a team with two good scoring lines (Pens).

It's amazing how quickly scoring depth, our biggest strength, has become a bit of a weakness. Our third line needs a ton of work.

Oh, I do agree. I think Coburn and Timonen should be put together with Carle and Pronger, BUT I was basing it off of what he did last year and what the Ducks did. I might be wrong, and if I am someone correct me, but didnt Niedermayer and Pronger play on the same pairing?
Id like to see a DET esqthrid line that can shut down people. I also think that Briere is still gone, we need space next year when Emery's deal is up. We can use that money to sure up the third line, but sacrificing the top line. Ideally we take guys within the org and make them checkers haha.
Did you put Parent on the third line because someone better than Carle has to be with Marshall? I don't want Parent playing the third line he needs to log more minutes to improve more so he can be the best d-man he can be.

That, and I want to see what Carle can do when he has somebody to cover him. I love Coburn, but he's no Pronger. Another variation would be Coburn-Pronger, Timonen-Carle. Another would be Timonen-Parent, Coburn-Pronger, etc. We have versatility, that's for sure.

I saw you say ideally that will be our 4th line next year, however, just felt the need to say that if they are our third line, there is NO WAY this team is competing for a cup. That needs to be significantly upgraded.....Which is why Jones and Carle need to be moved. When you have a cheap guy like Parent that can play in the top 4, you need to take advantage of that.

Agreed on all counts, although I want to see Pronger and Timonen on separate pairings at even strength.
I would be fine with Nodl getting an extended look on the 3rd line, if we fill it in with two veteran players. This guy is a good prospect, not sure why people just decided he was crap after one taste of the NHL....

Love your forwards, although I would swap Nodl and Asham Malhotra!!! I think CBJ is going to re-sign him though....
As for your defense, I want Carle moved to be honest....You can get a good 3rd pairing dman in here AND a decent 3rd liner for his salary. Move Parent into the top 4.
I think he is a RFA, we offer him like 3mill we don't have to give up a 1st...right?
we have like 3.4 in cap space after the pronger deal and Emery's salary. Forget Powe, he was only there cause Kalinski got hurt and took his spot.

Would love to move Carle in a 3 way deal for Clowe type player (not an easy task)
Bring Bodrov from KHL. He is ready.
Replace Jones with veteran d-men and invest the rest of the $ into 3rd line center. Flyers fans like Malhotra? Fine, lets get him here. He made 1.2M a year. As long as he can help limiting Malkin, Crosby Parise scoring chances I am all for it. I'd love to get someone more physical but that will cost.
Flyers have 6.25 in Carle and Jones. Thats CRAZY!
Or make it real simple. Waive Jones (JVC will go crazy ha-ha) and invest Jones $ into 3rd line center. Bring Bodrov. This is doable.
I still do not want Mike Knuble unless he takes a big pay cut. As of now we have enough leaders.

Sometimes they did, sometimes they didn't. Kinda depended on the matchup.

Yea that simply is too much for a bottom pairing. There is no question that at least one of them is gone. Maybe both. When acquire a guy that plays 25 minutes a night on the PP and PK and ES, you are able to cut some other D out. I think that Carle can still serve a purpose here, he played great in the playoffs. I think that he and Pronger may be a good combo actually. Depends how much Pronger wants to jump up on the rush. This is doable, just need to get the most out of it.
I can't see them keeping Jones or Carle on the 3rd pairing and running out a **** 3rd line. I think odds are good they're both gone.
I highly doubt Jones is going anywhere for 3 reasons. 1. It seems Stevens likes Jones. 2. Jones costs too much for a 3rd pairing d-man 3. He just had surgery this Summer so no one is going to want to take him in a trade. The only thing we could probably do is waive him but since it seems Stevens likes him that is unlikley.

Our scoring depth was overrated in many ways. Our team was pathetic at ES. How does scoring depth help us when we look bad on ES??? Our PP as it is now looks like this.
Gagne-Richards-Briere
Pronger-Carle
Hartnell-Carter-Giroux
Timonen-Coburn
Thats AWESOME.
We will still get points during the PP. Hopefully we also grab a defensive C who can win faceoffs and play PK.
I think the re-arrangement of the defense and the puckmovers we have on the back-end will only help the forwards. Having Briere and Giroux around all season is a good thing, and JVR is available if we need him. I am very happy with this team. My concerns now rest on Ray Emery and injuries. We should expect to see much better puck movement on the back end.

Moving Jones and bringing in Bodrov for the bottom pairing would be ok with me.
I see the defense ending up like this. The first 2 are preferred for me. Our top 4 is NASTY!!!!!!! In many ways, I want to keep Carle for this season and move Jones. Carle's puck movement on the bottom pairing would be a plus. Otherwise a Carle-Pronger pairing and a Coburn-Timonen pairing is ideal. Honestly, having those 2 out most of the game changes the blueline immensely. Puck movement between those pairings is good. A Parent-Jones pairing is a terrible 2nd pairing, but a solid 3rd IMHO. This defense is incredible.
