Seventh Round Pick: Canucks Select Steven Anthony

Apparently we just picked Anthony with pick 187.

6'1 205.

March 91' Born in Halifax.

Used to projected as a top pick for this draft.

Plays Centre/LW Left Handed Shot.

Played for Saint John of the QMJHL (Same team as Sauve).

67GP 19G 29A 48P 47PIM

The pick was originally owned by Phoenix, we traded RFA D Shaun Heska (a FA signing 3 years back) for this pick.

Nice, Heska was an RFA who was awful defensively in the playoffs, would just be taking a spot away from Ellington, Oberg, or a more promising/better defender in Manitoba.

We bought this pick by promising PHX some corporate sponsorship.

:O Heshka gone! Well, from what we saw in the Calders, Heshka wouldn't have really had much impact in the NHL anyways... I say good transaction.

I guess the main knock on Anthony is consistency and work ethic? Its sort of a worrisome characteristic, but from what i've read in the past weeks, he has the talent and skill to be a top round pick. If i remember correctly, someone was saying that he was one of the most highly touted players in the draft pre-season, but i guess dropped off quite severely since.

Crap. I was wrong. I thought it was from the CHI trade.

Love this pick-up. This guy could turn out to be a serious steal if we get his development path going the right way.

Hopefully Gillis and his specialists in development can get his butt in gear.

Look for him to have a breakout year in the Q next year.

Nice to take another 91 too.

Not bad numbers, good size, a solid pick for the 7th round, appears to be a tad bit better than Evan Fuller.

Another Saint John player that has failed to live up to expectations, I'm seeing a pattern here. On the plus side the coach who has taken most of the criticism for their terrible development of prospects has been fired. We might have ourselves a real good pick here.

Such a good pick. Low risk with a 7th road pick (bye Heshka), very high reward.

Hopefully the new coach and our camp this year will put this kid back on the right track.

Some interesting posts from people on here on Steven Anthony (this is from 2006):

Everytime he is out there he creates something and he just makes you take notice.

Nova Scotia isn't a weak Midget league anymore, it is a pretty good development league now, Sidney Crosby, James Sheppard, Ryan Hillier, Brad Marchand, Colin White, etc have all came from there.

Is he as good as Crosby? No. But he is a damn good player.

Also the Subways coach said he reminds him of a more skilled, speedier James Sheppard.
And from 2009:

Wish I could see an icetime chart to see the upgrade in time since Chris left, but either way, he is producing more. Unfortunately, I've yet to have a chance to see him play since Dido left.

Good offensive awareness, knows where the puck will end up, average shot right now. Great size already, 6`2 205. Very good skater for his size.

It means we got a poor man's Canadian Pavel Bure.

I posted this in the Day 2 thread but here it is again:

Quote:
But his mercurial competitive level has been a bone of contention with scouts for many years, even when he broke out in the second half last season with 30 points in the final 29 games. In 93 previous games, he had only produced 32 points.

“If he more consistently played his best game, he’d be in the top echelon of the draft,” says Central Scouting director E.J. McGuire, who ranks Anthony 184th among North Americans. “We’d be talking about him as a first-rounder.”

Anthony, it seems, recognizes his criticisms.

“Scouts see I’ve got talent and I can play,” Anthony says, “but it’s game-in and game-out, not getting down on myself and playing focused and positive every game.”

It looks like it, lol.

And unless Detroit takes him, it looks like Kuchin will go undrafted

Guys, ignore scoutman1's posts. I recognize that post from the thread dedicated to Steve Anthony, and scoutman did nothing but pimp the **** out of him, comparing him to Crosby in every single way.

Scoutman has a huge maritime player bias.

But Steven Anthony is a serious steal in terms of a high reward prospect. He can really turn out to be something.

I'm loving the picks.

Might as well shoot for the moon with these lower picks. Could be a steal.
