Good use of a seventh rounder, Anthony was a huge prospect a couple years ago. Just lock him in a room with Ryan Walter until he has his head on straight and we might have something.

Like the fact that we could turn a free agent signing like Heska into something.

Heska is not NHL caliber and, at least, Anthony is something of a prospect - although Anthony may well be a player that topped out early.

Getting something for Heshka shows the value of picking up undrafted players and is a reason why the Canucks should be looking around for other undrafted prospects. Should put Heisinger to work here.

Another thing it does is it gets rid of a contract from our 50 contract limit.

This is an excellent pick. Anthony has a ton of skill.

If work ethic is all he needs, I'm sure that can come with maturity. Great pick by Gillis.

Wow, I remember reading threads about him on the boards two or three years ago and people were saying definite first rounder. Just noticed him on NHL.com and couldn't believe it... he must've dropped off like crazy.

Steve Anthony! How old is that guy!? Last time I saw him he was a bad dj on MuchMusic that tried to look like the lead singer of Simpleminds. Brutal pick.

I like this pick. You know the Canucks saw a lot of him this year and they probably would have heard from Sauve about him. That's two picks in the draft where one of our prospects was on their team. (Plus Fredheim would have played Connauton a fair amount.

This pick was traded for by Jimmy Sharrow. Shaun Heshka is still our property.

We didn't get a pick for Sharrow. Shaun Heshka was dealt to Phoenix for the 7th round pick so we could get Anthony.

My apologies. I thought the conditions on the pick had been met and missed the Heshka trade.

Naw. Sharrow had to play something like 10 games for us to get the 7th round pick IIRC.

Just posting here so I can quote myself later. Steve Anthony will be a Canuck within 5 years and may turn out to be a top line forward.

Anthony played last year with Brett Gallant (our fighter who scored 6 goals all year, I believe) and Mike Thomas (grinder who also didn't hit double digits)...he also was splitting time with Matthew Stoddard...

This year, he started out on a top line with Dido and Sparling, but was getting no PP time...he struggled to maintain .5PPG, but once Dido left (got injured, then returned directly to the WJHC camp), Steven really picked it up, racking up PPG...he was Saint John's best offensive threat a lot of nights...

What I find weird is that Phillipe Paradis was a 1st rounder and Anthony a 7th, despite having similar stats (though Anthony's are actually easier to explain)...

And as for the comments about his two way game, a lot of Q fans thought he was going to look terribly out of place for the Canada-Russia challenge, but he did an awfully good job as a checking centre...

So why is this guy so low on everyones draft list? Even we didnt draft him with the 6th round.

yeah, reminds me of a quote from some GM in the past when asked about a player they drafted late who turned out good.

"You think if we knew he was that good we would have waited till the 7th round to draft him?"

something like that anyways.

We don't know where they had everyone rated....all the guys they picked could have been in their top 120 players. Plus maybe the Canucks had a feeling no other team was high on him but they saw something in him to garner a pick.

I hate to use this example and by no means am i comparing but Zetterberg and Datsyuk were rated low on most lists by most teams.

Even if the critics are right that Anthony is a kid who developed early and peaked in his mid-teens, at least the organization is picking prospects who ONCE had talent opposed to some of the past 7th rounders.

Saint John's seems to blow for player development.

You have Yann Sauve, the 1st overall pick in the QMJHL, who dropped to the second round with questions about having tools with no toolbox. Then you have Steve Anthony, a guy who many thought (before at least) could be a first round pick this year, who has work ethic issues. I'm beginning to wonder if Despres could have been up there with Cowen.

That's a kick in the groin, but so true.
