What I'd like to see Homer do is move Jones for a pick -- worse case, waive him -- as purely a Cap casualty (-$2.75M)... Sign Alberts for $1.5M and Knuble if possible to a one year Bonus laden contract of $1M -- with a gentleman's agreement that he will be signed to at least one more such contract, if CBA allowed, or a regular contract -- if need be he is signed to the best Hometown Discount he will give us... Then sign Recchi to a one year deal at $1.5M and allow him to retire a Flyer. That is a net gain of $1.25 excluding subsequent year's bonuses. If Carle can be moved, that would lower the gain.

Looking at the forwards we now have, it is apparent to me that the Flyers cannot lose Knuble and then they still need one more quality winger (Recchi)... Jones, with his last year, is now expendable; Carle less so, but has a higher Cap hit... A 4th line Center/FO specialist is still needed.

Briere, if he can be moved for a 3rd line two-way winger and pick/prospect would be a sad but effective move to ease the Cap and supply a top 9 forward... but his points would be missed. Those points can be offset with a better D-minded winger.

Sign two of them, stick Powe on their wing, and call it a day.

Lose knuble because of age but sign Shanny?
Does not compute.

And wasn't Shanny signed on the cheap because he was a mid-year signing?... IIRC.

To me though, I think the concern with many/most here is the Cap space he'd require.

I actually think its better to move Carle first, for two reasons. 1) He has a larger cap hit, and 2) Since this is the final year of Jones' contract, if we move Carle, then both are already off the books for 2010-11. One less thing we have to worry about next offseason.

I've got the Flyers having $3M and change to work with and 4 roster spots to fill. I think we can safely rule out the Sedins coming here.

As far as Recchi and Peca are concerned, I think their too slow for the task we need them to fill. Malhotra is younger, and better faceoff guy. Unfortunately, he'll also a larger contract.
Yea he will have a larger contract but i think it would be worth it.

I am going to assume both Carle and Jones are dealt for cap space for third liners and replaced with third pairing D men, most likely one puck mover and one defensive. Scenario B is one of Jones and Carle are gone and we just need a Defensive one.

Third pairing D men
FAs

Defensive:
Alberts
Montador
Foster
Cullimore
Skrastins
Hnidy
Zanon

Puck Movers:
Koistinen
Boullion
Seidenberg
Bergeron
Pock
Huskins
Murphy

Other Options:
Syvret
Guenin
Long shots Bourdon/Marshall/Bodrov
Trade for Stralman/Frogen(Tor)
Trade for Exelby(ATL)
Trade for Russel(CBJ)
Trade for O'Donnel(LAK)
Trade for Picard(Ott)

I wonder if there are bookies taking bets on us signing Conklin. Would mean his third Winter Classic plus the Heritage Classic for him.

The answer is no.

I agree with everything. Hell no from me. We do not need his leadership either.

Richards, Pronger, Gagne, Timonen, Briere... Big dogs.

Gagne - Richards - Briere
Hartnell - Carter - Giroux
Carcillo - Pahlsson - Nodl
Cote - Powe - Asham

Pronger - Coburn
Timonen - Parent
Jones - Alberts

Emery - Conklin

That lineup would still leave enough room for some depth forwards and a 7th defenseman (providing Homer doesn't hand out silly contracts to Pahlsson or Conklin), and a little room for injuries (though not ideal). The only way I can see keeping Knuble is to move BOTH Jones and Carle, and even then it would be tough (and I love Knuble so everyone can save the bashing).
I think this is a good choice if Nitty isn't coming back though I would like him to if he is not hampered by hip issues.

Yea, I like Niitty, but you have to wonder if management hasn't already made the decision to go in a different direction. I guess we'll know soon enough.

What sort of contract was Mike Sillinger on last year, I didn't know he was a free agent but I remember him always being quite good on faceoffs I think? He always seemed pretty versatile as to where you can put him in the lineup but I don't really know how good or bad he's been the last few years, not watched him a whole lot.

2.2M a year. Last year he was injured (hip) played in only 7 games

A year before he missed 30 something games. (hip)

Looks like Malhotra will be going to free agency...

Malhotra Signing Appears Unlikely
Quote:
MONTREAL -- With two days to go before NHL free agency opens, it's almost certain that Blue Jackets center Manny Malhotra will test the market.

General manager Scott Howson and Malhotra's agent have not spoken in more than a week since negotiations stalled.

Howson would say only that "We have significant ground to cover" if a deal is to get done.

The two sides are apart on both dollars and the length of the contract, Howson said. Malhotra made $1.5 million last season, the final year of a three-year contract.

Malhotra has not returned several calls from The Dispatch this offseason.

Sillinger made $2.2M with the Isles last season and is a UFA... I see him as a perfect even though today is his 38th birthday. That said, I see his potential Cap hit as too large... unless he is willing to take a cut. I'd think that he would have a fair demand with his skills. It is worth Homer's exploring Wednesday, IMO.

I wasn't aware -- ashamed -- That could seriously lower his new contract. Hmmm... Another gamble, Homer?... How many can we possibly win?

If the cap hits are in the same ballpark, I'd rather have a Pahlsson or a Malhotra.

That's no knock on Sillinger, but given his age and injury concerns, there are better options if the salaries are comparable, IMO.

Looks to me as if he wants more than the Flyers can afford to give in Cap hit for the role.

At this point I don't know if they can afford any of them and still address the wings... They are losing approaching 60 goals if Knuble leaves; Briere makes up for some of that, if he stays, but the once strong three lines are now two strong ones and wing and a prayer -- pun intended -- The other center may have to be a bargain basement fit.
