I would really like to see Blair Betts signed as our third line center. I have a Rangers friend who is super high on him and he is a member of the Rangers' #1 PK. While looking into what Betts might require contract wise to fiddle with it in my salary cap roster tweakings, I came across Sjostrom, the other part of the Rangers' #1 PK. I figure both of these guys could be had from less than 1.8 million dollars total. It would give our lines the look of:

Gagne-Richards-Briere
Giroux-Carter-Hartnell
Nodl-Betts-Carcillo
Sjostrom-Powe-Asham

For this example I dropped Jones, signed Alberts to the same CAP hit he had this past year, but this could just as easily be another FA defenseman with similar contract terms, so our top 6 D-men look like this (not really worried about pairings...just an example so I can figure out CAP stuff):

Timmonen-Coburn
Pronger-Carle
Parent-Alberts

For goalies sake I did add Backlund as the back-up because it would probably similar CAP hits for any other back-up (excluding if Niity returns).

With my calculations and assumptions are correct it gives us a total CAP number of $54,586,500 which gives us a buffer of $2,213,500. While people here are very high on a Pahlsson or Malhotra, their CAP hits would be higher then Betts and without the possible upside of his PK ability. This roster would essentially allow the Carter line to simply concentrate on 5v5 and allow some more playtime for 3rd/4th liners who are capable on the PK, thereby giving very valuable rest to our biggest offensive weapons.

We are essentially adding the Rangers' PK ability from last season and upgrading it a bit(not including Lundqvist) with Timmonen, Pronger, Coburn and Parent. Also this will probably give us the most manageable CAP situation especially with the chance of a huge decrease next season, as well as carrying a 7th D-man and 13th forward in case of short term injuries. This also leaves us a bunch of room heading into the trade deadline if we feel we could use an extra piece for the all important play-off push.

HAHA... At least we saw the two Cups.

The other night I watched the Best Games DVD and the 2nd game of the '74 SCF with those guys and the rest of the Championship Bullies vs Orr, Espo, Bucyk, Hodge, Cashman, O'Reilly, Sheppard, etc. -- It seemed like Orr was out there every minute except when he took at blocked shot that shook him up -- Clarke was terrific... made Crosby seem like a slacker. Bernie was unbelievable at the end of the game and OT. It was a great evening reliving that game.

Shouldn't this thread be the pre-pre free agency thread day until tomorrow?

FWIW: Homer on re-signing Knuble:

Quote:
There has been some speculation in the media that the addition of Pronger means that Mike Knuble will not be back with the club after a productive four seasons.

That's not necessarily the case, said Holmgren.

"I have said all along that Mike is a guy that we want to bring back and Mike has said the same thing to me. There are a couple of days left before July 1 and we will see what we can do. I will talk to his agent today and probably tomorrow just to see what we can come up with to try and keep Mike in the fold.”

I didn't move to the Philly area until the mid-80s, so I didn't share the joy, but remember those days well.

Orr-never made a bad pass, best part of his game.
Parent-Technically perfect. Made great goaltending look easy.
Clarke-110% all the time. Never took a night off, dirty as hell.
Espo-Underrated all around player. Great stickhandler, stronger on his skates than anyone in his day.

Glorious hockey back then to be sure!

By joking, I assumed you were inviting us all to join in, and play along.

Sorry to disappoint you.

FlyersJunky

I am going to plan your pre-post funeral arrangements after I pre-prepare the post-pre-pre-post-pre-weapon I'm pre-going to post-use to pre-destroy post-you! And then pre-heat the oven to 360 for a post-midnight snack!

How much do you think we'd be getting back in that deal? I'd want Halak for sure.

Any chance we can get Schneider and/or Raymond from Vancouver for Carle?

I guess I was wrong about something and only YOU know what I was wrong about. Addressing problems on blue line was more important then Mike freaking Knuble. Mike can have a long term deal with some other team, not us. We can afford to lose his presence in front of the net.

I wanted JayBo (still do) Flyers went for Pronger (who knew?). D needed upgrade. It was done. We paid a very high price imo.

Whats more important now is to address back up. Emery is a good goalie but I think it is important to get a very good back up and shut down 3rd line center. I know, I know you like Mike Knuble. bla bla bla

I have no clue, but I'd hope Plekanec would be in there somewhere.

I can't for the life of me see the Canucks moving Schneider until Luongo is signed long-term. Not saying he's a proven NHL goalie (...yet) capable of replacing Luongo, but he's clearly their insurance policy.
