Gomez's contract
Fleecing our farm system
Gomez's attitude

This poll is like asking which one of the three is the worse?

Definatly the salary because Higgins and Mcdonagh we lose them, it hurts but its done. The salary on the other hand will hurt us for years to come. I really don't understand this trade... Ppl were complaining about Kovalev at 4.5m imagine Gomez... The poor kid, he may ask for a trade but im not sure any other team wants him for his salary...

This should be a multiple choice poll because to me it's all four.

There is absolutely nothing i like about this deal. Now i'm just praying that something else will happen tomorrow because right now i'm very pessimist about the future of this team.

Gomez's salary.
Gomez's contract.
Gomez is not the kind of center we need.
Giving up on Higgins at it's lowest value.
Losing McDonaugh.

cap hit isn't great and not having a true sniper to go with Gomez, it might be the case with Andrei but it's still projection

I concur… all four. Higgins for Gomez's albatross contract already smelt like Ribeiro–Niinimaa. But this…

Is April 1st late this year, or what?

From the perspective of a fan of Gomez's former team, his contract was the killer. He's a good player, and I would have liked to keep him if we could knock $2M or so off his cap number.

Mcdonagh... I think that he had potential... Gomez is still a 70-80 points, so is way more then Higging. Think have it whit Kovalev to be it in the goal...

Maybe BG though that Subban and Weber have enough potential to give McDonagh to get a first line center, that what Gomez is after all what ever some others are saying. You have to give to get after all!

Future will tell!
Look at : http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl1998e.html
Is in the elite of that year (Yes Markov, Spacek and Horcoff are there plus some top goaler but Gomez is still good enough!

I voted losing McDonagh, but then I looked up Gomez's contract on NHLscap.com to see if it's as bad as I remember.

It's worse.

What I don't like... well past Gomez's contract, I don't have to pay it and that's a couple of million of dead cap space...

What i don't like is that he's a guy the Habs don't need. He's a fine player, he just doesn't seem to fill anything the Habs have wanted.

The Habs' need are the same after the trade as before. They still need that first-line center and they don't have him. They still don't have a big center.

Gainey has traded for a guy that ostensibly fills none of the Habs' needs. I really don't get it.

Unless Gomez is being miscast as a first-liner at 65 points a season. Which is frightening.

This should have been multiple choice. I don't like any of the aspects in the poll.

Losing Higgins hurts because he's a young affordable two-way winger with potential to become a part of our top six for years to come. At worst he will be a great checker.

Losing McDonagh hurts because he's our best defensive prospect and we are already most likely losing an established top 4 defenseman tomorrow in Komisarek.

Taking on Gomez I don't love because he's not what our team needs up front. We needed someone bigger or at least someone who can score some goals but we got a smallish playmaker who will need elite wingers in order to produce.

Taking on Gomez's salary is obviously bad and needs no further comment.

McDonagh is the only part I really don't like.

Aside from that, I'm ok with it.

- Losing McDonagh.
- Gomez's salary.
- Having to give up on the idea of acquiring Lecavalier and/or the Sedins in all likeliness.
- The fact that Gomez is not the type of player who gives the Habs a new identity. We're still a smurf team, which is disgusting.
- Gomez is certainly not the "big no. 1 center" Gainey was searching for.
- The fact that Gomez has only scored 20+ goals once in his career.
- Losing Higgins, who despite a mediocre season, is still a pretty decent cheap two-way player.
- Knowing that Gainey probably did this as a panic move, because he senses that it'll be hard to sign any one of the premium UFAs who will be on the market at noon tomorrow...
