i unfortunately just got the fact that this year is going to rely heavily on cheap back up goal tending. if in a week or the first two weeks of the season emery doesn't work out we are so screwed. it won't matter who we have on D. or who our 3rd line center is. we are screwed in the goalie department.

Raycroft could be a disaster.

the ideal person to get would be Harding, although im not sure we have the assets any longer for that. Maybe Carle + Maroon?

I personally think Jussi has great potential to be a much better player within the next 2 years, so at that value, I consider it a steal if he does.

Me either, but it might beat Emery/Backlund which they are considering.

I don't trust Raycroft as a starter anymore. Homer likes the idea of taking a player who is having issues and trying to re-claim them and make it look like a steal or players who need the "change in scenery" (like Eminger, Carcillo, Carle). I would feel more comfortable having Nitty as a back-up, but Raycroft (if he signs a similar deal like last season) could be had for $800,000 as compared to Nitty who would fetch around or more than $1.2 million. Some of it will depend on it they think Backlund is viable as an NHL back-up because a Backlund/Emery combo is going to cost probably the same as Raycroft/Emery (if they both have a hit of $800,000).

It's also not just our team, but others are going to need a cheap back-up so I wouldn't be surprised if some team signs him to a very cheap 1 year deal.

That actually scares me less. I'm pretty sure Raycroft would be a disaster (a goalie that has issues playing under pressure in Philly) whereas Backlund actually might be decent if needed. I'll take the slim hope of success over the almost certainty of failure. That said, I just hope Emery lights **** on fire and the backup is a moot point.

More like the Habs tied a ball and chain on each foot, threw away the key and jumped into the Mariana Trench

Well I guess now Briere won't be going to the Habs for cap relief. Would have made the most sense to have fit their needs and probably could have done it for a few picks next season. Oh well, now it's time to see if Heatley becomes a Ranger.

That's actually not that bad... meh. If we play them, a Phaneuf-Bouwmeester vs a Timonen-Pronger would be fun to watch. (thats kinda like young vs old though lol)

JayBo actually plays D, Phaneuf hits people.

Still a very dangerous pairing.

They probably split them up, but they still have Regehr, who is an excellent defenseman.

If by split them up, you mean trade...then yes. With JBo on board, how much cap room do they have? You can't go another year and give Iginla spare parts to play with, he deserves 1st line players.

Yeah, Phaneuf has to be traded. They were playing with 15 players last year and just added $6.6M without subtracting much.

I didnt' mean trade actually.

Iginla has Jokinen or Langkow.

plus a defense of Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Regehr, Sarish and bottom pairing is nasty!

Sort of applicable, Ted Nolan to Devils?:

Nolan expected to return to hockey -- WILL BE UPDATED
Posted By The Sault Star

Legendary Soo Greyhounds head coach Ted Nolan is expected to return to the hockey Wednesday, following the expiry of his contract with the NHL's New York Islanders.

Nolan, a former Jack Adams Trophy winner as NHL coach of the year, was fired by the New York Islanders prior to the 2008-09 season.

Reached Tuesday, the 51-year-old native of Garden River refused to confirm that he would he signing with a new club, he said earlier this year that he would be free to do so as of Canada Day.

A full story will follow as more details become available.

They got rid of Vandermeer, Bertuzzi and Cammalleri will more than likely walk, Primeau will more than likely be stashed in the minors. So, there is some money that will be freed up. I'm sure more money will end up being cut from elsewhere so that they don't have to pare the defense.

With that being said, signing Bouwmeester certainly opens the door for a trade to add to the forward corp. Phaneuf or Regehr will bring back a maximum return as both are signed long term and are still young.
