Same for me, but if Gainey can sign Hossa or Havlat or even Gaborik to a half-decent contract tomorrow, then I'll be completely fine with it. It's the "half-decent" part that's scary. Despite them being fine players the Habs now have at least two "bad" contracts with Gomez (until he proves otherwise this year, which I think he will) and Hamrlik...they can't really afford another albatross.

Why is the option None of the above there? Cuz I don't give a damn about Higgins as we have plenty of Higgins on the team. I don,t care too much for McDonough since he's still a prospect and at best look like he'd be a Komi whom I don,t care if he's gone. ANd the two others compensate for the two we get. So basically, we give an average player and a potential Komi for a number center man. That's fine with me. As for his contract, he has the same cap hit than Vinny with about the same career stats. If we sign Tanguay and Kovy, we therefore get finally a great first line and we still have both depth AND money to keep shopping.

For once, I think Bob made a smart move. And what if this wasn't plan B? What if we could stil get Vinny?

Gomez salary.

Im actually excited to see him play. He is one fast mother****er but with a cap hit of 7.3M$ i rather go for the Sedins instead or Jay Boo.

And loosing McDonagh hurt aswell. I dont think it was necessary to put him in this trade where the Rangers cleary want to get rid of that ugly contract.

I've never liked Gomez as a player. I don't like his contract. He is a player that I would not have traded for, at least not by giving up a top prospect.

The other thing that bothers me is that I just don't understand Gainey's 5-going-on-6 year plan.

What don't I like? That our GM thought Gomez was the best use of 7 mils of cap space. Or that complaints are always made about our bottom 3 defensemen, yet our best defensive prospect was also thrown in on the deal. Wow. Just wow.

Same for me...I am still furious about this stupid trade...

Sather should now try trading Redden for the Kostitsyn brothers and Subban since he as already robbed Gainey once..No harm in trying a second time...

All of the above. and yet again, Montreal is without a big #1 center...Gomez is a band-aid for a gaping wound.

Don't like this deal at all.

I think people have to remember 2 things: good UFAs don't want to come to Montreal, and our good UFAs tend not to want to stay. With these conditions, the best alternative is to trade. Other GMs know this, and so can ask for more because they know we are not in a bargaining position.

I was shocked when I saw the deal, but then I had to face reality ... this is the best we can hope for until Montreal becomes a more attractive destination ... and not only for the party animals who want some Quebecois tail!

This whole thing is just awful. In rough order

1) Gomez' salary limits our other options.
2) This is a terrible contract and actually giving up three useful assets is crazy, as opposed to offering a bag of pucks. Sather: "Well, what do I get out of this? "You don't have to pay Gomez that foolish contract now F off and stop asking about McDonaugh."
3) End of Koivu in Montreal.
4) Related to 1) why not try to sign UFA's first then fall back on this as plan B if you cannot get Sedins, Hossa, whatever.

and to your point, how about:

5) If it's even possible, this move will actually make it less likely for us to get FA's in the future.

Think about the most vilified players on the team over that past 10-15 years; Brisebois (V.1) and Theodore were near the top of the list, because they signed big deals and couldn't live up to them. Not that they were THAT bad, simply performance < contract.

Now consider Gomez, who has absolutely no chance to perform up to his contract. He's a nice player, but zero chance he can reach a level of performance where you'd say, 'yeah, $7.3M for him isn't too bad'. Now add to this the fact that everyone expected Vinny, so Gomez will be the overpaid, underproducing, American-born face of failing to land Vinny. He will be booed to extinction and this will add to the belief that players should go find any other place to play than Montreal.

-Gomez contract stinks, but how many centers were available that could be 1st liners. Who?? Briere who is making a million less but 2 more years. Marleau? God knows the asking price.
-No UFA in their right mind would go to a team with no real first line talent.
-Webber, Subban, Carle...all ahead of McDonaugh.
-Habs needed to get better now, not in 3 years (Mcdonaugh)

As much as the cap hit hurts, its not a horrible move. Look what Chris Pronger cost.

Pronger is 36- 1 more year left on his contract FOR Lupul (30 goal scorer), Sbisa (right now ahead of Mcdonaugh) and 2 first rounders.

If tha habs got fleeced then what did Philly get?

People are just moreupset because Gainey didnt get Jesus Lecavalier, he just wasnt getting traded, end of story.
Thing is Briere is still making less and has proven he can actually put up allstar numbers. Barring injury, Briere has put Gomez to shame every single season, with one season being five points off 100. Now I never liked the idea of Briere because his contract is ridiculous however at least he has proven he can play up to the dollars he is paid, his problem is he is too injury prone. Gomez? Gomez has proven he net more than 80 points once in his entire career.

If given the option, I'd have gambled on Briere a million times before Gomez.

People complain that Koivu never had a real winger, what about Gomez? He helped Gionta hit 48 goals one year, what has the midget done since then? Who else has he had, Elias? He's a pass first player. An old Naslund and inconsistent Zherdev too. Jagr is the only real great winger Gomez played with, but they are both puck possession type of players, of course it didn't work. Not to mention he's only played on defensive minded teams.
