Wow Blake took a discount. No wonder Doug Wilson gets it done right away. Nice deal. Every bit of saving could add up and make a difference in other signings.

Yea but everyone including Blake knew he wouldn't be making that again this year if he wanted to stay in SJ. Most estimates were 4, he signed for 3.5, 500k difference imo

Good signing for a good price. Blake was pretty underrated last year and I think has helped players like Douglas Murray grow his defensive game a lot.

This is a very-good signing in my opinion. Blake took a discount to stay. He could have easily gotten 4.5 to 5 on the open market.

This is why, copying my own post from the Sharks forum:

Actually, it's going to take more than just Clowe or Cheechoo. It's probably going to take at least 2 roster players making a combined ~$5 million or so at a minimum. More likely it will take 2 roster players making $8 million or more. Depending on how they round out the bottom 6, it could take more than that.

Right now, the Sharks look like:

PM (6.3)+JT (7.2)+Seto (1.25) = 14.75
MM (4.4) + Pavs (1.64) + Cheechoo (3.0) = 9.05
McGinn (1) + ?? + ?? = 1
?? + ?? + ??
Shelley (.725)

Boyle (6.67) + Luko (1.57)
Vlasic (3.1) + Blake (3.5)
Ehrhoff (3.1) + Murray (2.5)
Joslin (.517)

Nabby (5.375)

That's 51.857 million with 6 open roster positions but only a bit over $4 million in cap space. Say Clowe signs for $3 million and they manage to trade Cheechoo without taking on salary, making it a direct swap cap-wise. And assume Mitchell signs for $1 mil, and Staubitz signs for $550k.

That means you would need to sign a backup goalie, your entire 4th line (assuming Shelley and Staubitz count as the "extras") and a 3rd-line RW with just $2.5 million in cap space. That's just not enough. Even if you then trade Michalek to clear his $4.45 mil in cap space, you then only have $7 million to 6 players including a top 6 LW.
So trading Marleau or Michalek plus STILL isn't going to be enough to get Heatley. Assuming the very basic steps above, the Sharks are down to $2.5 million in cap space for 5 positions with Cheechoo gone and Clowe signed for Cheechoo's price. The Sharks are going to have to lose a decent salary now just to field a basic team and to have a little of cap room for injury call-ups. To acquire Heatley and still field a bottom 6 not made up of league-minimum salaries, and to have a little bit of cap space for injury call-ups means they would have to trade both Marleau and Nabby, and probably at least one more contract in the Lukowich or Murray range.

I just don't see it happening. But then, I never underestimate Doug Wilson's ability to do stupid things.

Its a 30% pay-cut. I'd say that's pretty large.
