July 1st Thread

With Cole, LaRose, and Seidenberg all walking, Rutherford is backpedaling on his wait and see approach to free agency. I would expect now that we will sign someone a lot sooner than we would have before.

Will it be Wednesday? If so, who?

The potential is there for us to grab a player or two that would really improve this team, but at the same time we could see another Eric Belanger.

Looking over the list of UFAs, some players I could see JR targeting, although not necessarily ones I would want:

Mike Knuble
Greg Zanon
Jason Williams
Ruslan Fedotenko
Mikael Samuelsson
Mark Recchi
Mike Grier
Jay McKee
Nick Boynton

Given our roster assuming we sign Babchuk and Ruutu, and based on JR's comments that he would like to spend a little more than the $50 million we spent last year, I would estimate we have $2-3 million to spend in free agency.

I don't know if we'll do anything about the defense, although I'd be down with McKee definitely.

I think Knuble could be a target, if we don't get him we may wait and sign Bertuzzi. I wouldn't be shocked if we added someone like Moen for the 4th line as well.

I really hope Knuble is a target. Of the players I just listed, the ones I would really be interested in are Knuble, Zanon, and Samuelsson. I would agree about the defense, though; given the fact that Kaberle and Wallin are both still here and we are high on Rodney and Carson, there's no reason to expect a signing there.

Signing Mike Knuble would really make me happy.

I would really like to see McKee and Knuble, maybe even Zanon too.

Dan Fritsche?? Does anyone know his shoulder situation? When healthy he is gritty and has good wheels? A 4th/3rd line guy with the ability to kill penalties....and he is still young. A reclamation project ever since CBus destroyed him by bringin him up to early and putting pressure on him as a local Ohio boy

Dan Hinote?
Paul Mara
trade for RFA Shane OBrien

I would really like to stay away from Bertuzzi, I never have been a fan of his even before his past.

I think most of this is moot as I see Larose panicking and signing a contract with Carolina at about 2 PM. At least, that's what I hope will happen.

If we're signing a power forward, I'd rather have the more of a goal scorer in Knuble. Bert would be my second choice as he'll probably command more money and length on his new contract.

its probably more likely that Chad finds one of the teams that spends to the cap willing to give him 2 mill to kill penalites and play on the third line. God id hate to see him in a Devils uniform.....can you imagine playing Chad and Clarkson? ...more talking than playing

So you've disliked him since before his birth?

lol Well, I wouldn't go that far. lol But I just never cared for him during his career, the Moore incident didn't help it. But you know, I would imagine that if I he became a Cane I could eventually be able to tolerate him.

Don't worry, I honestly don't think he'll even get a second look from our management. He just wouldn't fit in character-wise with the team. I really think there's no way we'd bring him in, but I've been wrong once or twice

Anyone feel like making a guess where our boys will end up?

Seids: Montreal or Gag-a-maggot Panthers...

Cole: Either the Sens or else the freaking slugs. I would be very shocked to see him head out west again...

Rosie: I'm still in hopes he calls JR tomorrow and says he's staying. If not, I see Columbus, Rangers, or Devils. I think I'l be a bit sick the first time I see him in another jersey. He was supposed to be a lifer!

Seidenberg: I'm thinking somewhere random...Edmonton

Cole: Here!...he'll realize he's not worth what he thinks he is and he'll come crawling back.

LaRose: Devils...to replace Gionta as the little guy.

Just watching some sports highlights and they showed Bertuzzi at the Jays game in Toronto. Something tells me it is rather likely Burke gives him a 3rd go around.

Someone was saying he lived up there and that he just enjoys baseball, they were saying in the other thread this meant nothing.

Born in Sudbury. Probably lives in the area I would imagine.

I wouldn't be surprised though if Burke brought him into Toronto. He loved him in Vancouver, only reason he got rid of him in Anaheim was because they were handcuffed in salary (and of course Burke was an idiot and gave him big bucks), so I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Big Bert land in TO sometime tomorrow on a cheap deal.

Well, seeing as our offseason seems to have taken an unexpected turn, I have come up with a list of potential possibilities JR may look to. I do not agree nor support the addition of all I will list. However, I am trying to look through JR's eye's here.

Forwards

Travis Moen
Brian Gionta (Wild Card. With the potential of Cole & LaRose gone, I could see JR making a call.)
Alex Tanguay (Wild Card. Same reasoning as Gionta.)
Taylor Pyatt
Petr Sykora
Mike Knuble
Mike Grier
Ales Kotalik
Maxim Afinogenov (Reclaimation project no. 7,214,155)
Tom Kostopoulos
Michael Rupp

Defenceman

Lordan Leopold
Steve Montador
Greg Zanon
Jay McKee
David Tanabe
Paul Mara
Nick Boynton
Hal Gill
Karlis Skrastins
Dmitri Kalinin
Marek Malik

He has size, we have had him before, he will be cheap, scrap pile, he put up a +118 from 2002-2006, he has size, we have had him before, he will be cheap, scrap pile, he has size, we have had him before, and he was a +118 combined for 4 straight NHL seasons. He will be cheap.

Signed,

Jim Rutherford
