I know its preliminary, but lets assume Bouwmeester signs with the Flames. Where would you rank Calgary's D then amongst the other teams. I still have Detroit as #1 on my list, but I would think with Sutter as our new coach that puts Calgary in the top 5 for sure.
Now that J-bo signed, what are you guys thoughts. After seeing Chicago's D up close in playoffs, I would rate them up there as well. Anahiem's is not what it was, and Philly's is alot better with Pronger.
For sure though I would say Calgary is in the top 5.
Definitely among the Top 5. I mean, Bouwmeester will compliment Phaneuf ALOT better than Giordano, Pardy or Vandermeer ever did. And Regehr and Sarich is an awesome shut-down tandem. And our 5th and 6th are looking pretty good too; either Giordano/Pardy or Giordano/Pelech, either of which, I'm fine with.
Awesome job Sutter!
Though we are screwed in a couple years, so we better win the Cup within the next two years, or else we'll be becoming the TML of the West.
perhaps you could post ever teams defensemen to give us all an idea
After reading your post here, it made me think that maybe it doesn't make too much sense to evaluate this until after alot of the free agents sign with their new repective teams. Although regardless, I have a hard time seeing any team being much better than the Flames current unit.
Top 5 no doubt especially if you are just looking at #1 to #4 ,which some say #5 and #6 are not important, some well argue they are. When you have a guy like Bou hogging ice time, you only need five dmen some nights.
When you think about it, as long as 3 of the top 4 defense are healthy you will likely see at least one of Regher/Sarich/Bouwmeester/Phaneuf on the ice, with almost half of the game played with 2 of them paired together.
Throw in a little more defensive responsibility from our star forwards and you have one hell of a shut down team. Of course, if the forwards cannot be taught the fine art of backchecking, this team will not do well. Even the Ducks with Pronger, Beauchamin and Neidermayer would've had problems if their forwards had as much defensive responsibility as the Flames of last season.
The pairings can be mixed up a lot with these four but I can see Sarich/Regher together at times on the PK and when they're ahead by a goal with less than a minute left. Phaneuf/Bouwmeester together when offense is needed or on the PP.
Regher(23)/Phaneuf(27) most of the game, get Dion to learn something by pairing with Regher
Expected minutes per game in brackets.
