I like the deal... now we need to add a scoring winger (Gaborik, short term with incentives?) and a Dman...

Lets go Gillis!

So waddya think - Are these Sedin guys any good?

Seriously this eats up a bit more cap space than Gillis likely wanted but he got his term. That is why they call this a negotiation and good negotiators know how to make deadlines work.

This kind of reminds me of saying of one of my law profs:

Law is crisis management profession - unless there is a crisis you cannot manage to get anything done.

BTW - No word yet on any NTC/NMC.

Gillis did what he needed to do to solidify the first line now he needs to find a puck moving D.

Really? They're asking for more than a player they outscored in the regular season who then disappeared in the playoffs? Outrageous.

Also, don't confuse cap hit with salary - Hossa will definitely earn more than Daniel + Henrik over the next 5 seasons.

Time for Gillis to find a winger, possibly a second line player and another defensemen.

All do-able with 10 million in cap space.

Still lots of cap space left.
10.8 for 8 players

Assuming Kyle Wellwood signs for his QO ($1million) and Cody Hodgson sticks (1.75 million cap hit) that's 8 million for 6 players

We still have to sign RFA Jannik Hansen, a backup goalie, a top 6 forward, a puck-moving defenseman + 2 scrubs

With the top 6 and puck-moving defenseman, that'll amount to quite a bit. Needless to say, unless we move some salary, we won't be making a big splash in the UFA market.

My feelings exactly. I would have liked a little bit lower, but I can certainly live with these numbers. Great to see that the Twins will be career Canucks. Now it's time to get down to business and see what else MG has in store today.

D. Sedin(6.1) - H. Sedin(6.1) - Burrows(2)
Demitra(4) - Kesler(1.75) - ????
Raymond(.833) - Hodgson(1.725) - Bernier(2)
Rypien(.550) - Johnson(1.15) - Hordichuk(.775)

Spare: ????

Bieksa(3.75) - Mitchell(3.5)
Salo(3.5) - Edler(3.25)
???? - ????

Spare: ????

Luongo(6.75)
????

RFAs: Wellwood, O'Brien, Hansen

Total Committed Salary: $47.773

I think there's enough space remaining to improve the team with some shrewd moves. Nice job by Gillis.

I'm glad Gillis got them to take our term. The cap hit, with the cap what it's at now, is fairly fair. I'm just worried about the cap going down...If it's a 1 or 2 year blip on the cap radar and starts to rise again after the next couple years this deal will be fine.

And I could be wrong, but I'm guessing people will stop *****ing so much once they see what guys like Gaborik and Hossa actually sign for. Don't forget that the Rangers have cap space to play with again, and the Habs are looking for a big name winger to go with Gomez.

Given what Agent007 just laid out for us, how do you figure we have 8 players left to sign? Are you including AHL contracts?

That's $4.3 million leaving us $4.7 million to push up right to the cap.

Gillis is going to need to employ "Sutter economics" to come away with a Gaborik or someone like that (unless Gabby will take a $4.5 million flyer here for a year or two).

We're going to need to trade to improve our defense through trade. Right now we need to fill that hole on the 2nd line.

I don't see the D as big of an issue as most...Edler should continue to improve. Ohlund was our 4th or 5th guy when everyone was healthy. It isn't great, but it isn't awful either. It's pretty average.

Anyone think Bernier could have a breakout year and move up to the second line for good?

A solid signing, and the money is no more than the twins deserve, but I admit I was hoping to get them at a lower cap hit.

This probably means the Canucks won't be adding another big name via free agency. Assuming Hodgson sticks, they have about $9 million in cap space with at least six players left to sign, including all the RFAs and a backup goaltender.

The Canucks will still need to add a defenseman or two as well.

Is Hodgsons cap hit 1.725 million or does the rookie bonus deferal come into effect?

If Wellwood, OBrien and Hansen sign near their qualifiers, I see about 4 million give or take left to bring in one dman.

If Sundin wants a job in Vancouver, he better be prepared to play for very little money.

My bad

Sedin(6.1)-Sedin(6.1)-Burrows(2)
Raymond(.8)-Kesler(1.75)-Demitra(4)
Grabner(.8)-Hodgson(.85)-Bernier-(2)
Hordichuck(.9)-Johnson(1)-Rypien(.533)

Edler(3.75)-???
Mitchel(3.5)-Salo(3.5)
O'Brien(1.5)-Bieksa(3.75)

Luongo (6.75)
Schneider?(.85)

I guess I overreacted a bit. Im still worried because we are missing a #1 dman and a #2 center. Kesler played wing on the 2nd line last year. Im not confident about how good the 2nd line will be offensively next year.

We could potentially still sign Gaborik but with Kesler up for a contract and Luongo reportedly wanting 8m () I doubt it would work.

Hodgsons bonuses can be moved to next season correct?

With Gaboriks injury history would it be possible to give him say, 3.5 million with 2.5 in bonuses that can be put on next seasons cap?

Not a good idea with the cap going down perhaps but it would be a way to get scoring punch.

So, go and sign Komisarek for around $4-$5 million on a long term deal. $1 million or less for the back-up. $1 million or less for the #7 d-man. Between $2-$3 million for another forward. That takes us right up to the cap.
