congrats to david bolland 5 year deal 18 million agreed to but not signed
3.6 per year is steep I think but could be a bargain in a couple years... Scares me what Versteeg and others might get from dumbass Dale Tallon

3.6 per? Wow. He deserves it, but I wonder what this means for the other guys, especially Barker. I hope we still draft a center first round.

I think Barker will go. Hope they can retain Versteeg.

LMAO!

I started up the fire Tallon thread and have been one of the advocates for him to get fired.

Bumping this in 2yrs wont mean much.

Tallon is skilled at trades and drafting. But he is 2nd worst GM in league when it comes to contracts. Only Sather is more incompetant

I really don't get the outrage over this contract. It shows me 2 things:

1) The Hawks brass thinks Bolland is part of "the core"

and

2) This deal will be a bargain in 2 years.

I think in the end they will be saving money, especially since the cap is not going down.

Oh yeah, Bolland is better for this team than Barker...

IMO, Versteeg while very talented, is expendable. He's the guy that you try to fill with your system (i.e. Makarov)

Can you tell me the lotto #'s?

I am sorry but only 1 yr of proven NHL success ( 81 GP , 19G and 28 A for 47pts +19)

Is not worth 3.6 mil a yr! How will Bolland play without Havlat?

Honestly, I think this is a great contract. It might be a little much for his performance to date, but he'll grow into it. I don't like the precedent it sets for the contracts we still have to hand out, however.

You need depth at center. Having a solid 2-way guy anchoring down one of our lines under Toews is awesome. The more of our young guys that we can lock up long term, the better off we'll be. I want to see this team blossom from the inside. I don't care if Havlat walks, or if we send Campbell and Huet to the darkside of the moon. The kids are alright...and the drafting's been good. Even the trades haven't been bad. I can only point at the Huet and Campbell signings as things Tallon has done that I don't care for. If we can somehow rectify those situations, we'll be in good shape. Although the consensus may be that players like Barker and Versteeg are not part of the core (and I agree), I think it would be an absolute tragedy if we didn't find a way to make them fit.

We could quite conceivably ice an entire squad acquired through the draft or trade if we stick to our guns...and be damned competitive with it.

We didn't...but I think the drafting of Dylan Olsen was fantastic. If we lose Barker...we have a replacement, hopefully. I was hoping we'd address that position as well. Seeing as how we didn't, however, it makes me feel even better about this signing. Having lines 1 and 2 anchored for the next several years is a good feeling.

It's going to be at the very least a year before we see Olsen in Chicago, most likely longer. It is nice to get some depth in the defensive pipeline though. I'm very high on Lalonde as well. He could fill Campbell's shoes if they can find a trade suitor, and Olsen could challenge for a 3rd pairing D-spot in a year or two.

I wouldn't say the first two lines are anchored considering Marty is about to become a free agent and Ladd's contract is up next year, but at least we are working on keeping our core in place. This is going to be a very interesting offseason.

I think he already has. Next offseason's gonna suck worse than this offseason. I'm gonna ask him the cap question at the convention if noone else does.

Officially signed. The contract value is $3.375 mil. per, rather than 3.6 as previously thought.

Here's the deal. We're not going to resign Havlat and Khabibulin. That's what...$12M right there? I know it would be nice to have Havlat back but...do you REALLY expect another full, healthy season out of him? I didn't even expect THIS one. We can't move Huet, and the money's sunk there already. We have to ride that horse.

We have SO much talent on this team, of course we're not going to be able to retain it all. I've made mention of this in other treads, but I'm going to make mention of it again:

Your free agents to be are restricted. Even if other teams pick them up, they're going to have to pay a pretty penny themselves (and they have the cap to contend with too), AND send us what'll likely amount to 1st round picks plus...in return. I think most teams are finally seeing the value of building from within. It's more economically viable.

You can argue that there's never a guarantee that a pick will turn into anything useful. But there's potential...and it's cheap. This league's all about potential these days.

I guess Brian Burke was right after all: Kevin Lowe killed the second contract.

Bolland is awesome and all, has great potential and can fill the 2nd line center hole NOW, but this is too much too soon IMO.

Holy crap. I mean, that much money for 5 years even...makes me wonder how much they would've given him for a shorter contract. But, if there's any guy who is actually somewhat worth taking a slight financial risk for, it's Bolland. It is unlikely you'll hear anyone complaining about the contract a couple years from now - I think it's safe to say he will meet the expectations of that kind of money.

I think the deal with Bolland is a good deal. We don't need Barker anymore, there are some good D's on the Free Agent market.
