he always put forth a good effort and showed some minor flashes sometimes and if i recall correctly he was pretty decent on the PK, but nothing special

A third liner. Real good speed. Was very good on the penalty kill for us. IMO.

The others pretty much hit it. To be honest I liked him as a 3rd liner, but thats his ceiling. During his callups he seemed to be one of our better players in the bottom 6. That being said he's still not all that great.

Have people forgotten the shorties he got (and several more he almost got) while on the PK? He's got good size, will play physical, has great speed... think he'll be a solid checking line guy. Brother is Mark Stuart (D, Boston), and I think he's got a nice upside. But the deal was really made for Toronto to be able to sign Komisarek.

i certainly haven't forgotten them, but you can make any player look like a superstar if you only talk about the good plays they made.

he had some good ones, but as most of us have said on here so far he is a solid 3rd line player who is good on the pk, and that's pretty much it.

Toronto fans shouldn't be down about Colin Stuart . His upside is a staple 3rd liner (who is a particular PK specialist) in the NHL.

For next season, I had him pegged as a guy who would play with the big club permanently, finally avoiding going back to the AHL, because his stint this past season with the Thrashers was nothing but POSITIVE news.

At least in John Anderson's system, Stuart was an absolute threat on the PK, and provided a good jump on the 3rd line outside of special teams. Has wheels, constant energy, hits, and a decent hands/shot. Out of the 5 goals he scored this season, 3 were SH goals, including a SHA. Thats 3 SH goals and a SHA in 33 games....not bad at all.

I, personally, am a bit bummed we have to lose Colin Stuart, but you have to give to get. Again, I thought next season he would finally make the big club permanently, because once he got his opportunities he made the most of them, and showed he can be a quality 3rd liner with an awesome knack for generating chances shorthanded. The PK was improving out of the dungeon while this team figured out that Colin Stuart is awesome in that role.

As long as he gets a chance and isn't shafted somehow in Toronto, I can only imagine that he'll improve from where he left off with the Thrashers.

Have fun with Kubina. He is underrated around the league and is probably a top 30-40 defencman in the NHL. He will help your PP tremendously, and is a good well rounded defencman. He is a bit slow, but should be well liked in Atlanta.

I hope that Excelby regains his old form, or else you guys definately won this trade... hands down.

Atlanta has a very good defence this year and as a Leaf fan I HATE this trade...

I hope Kubina is good here.. I liked the way he played in the old-NHL with TB, pre lockout. Haven't followed him much in his stint with Tor..... I know he had ups and downs in Toronto though.....

I think think team needs the veteran, "well-roundedness", moreso than his offensive abilities on the PP.... (See Kovalchuk, Enstrom, Bogosian, Hainsey at point).....but great nonetheless..

As for Exelby, he was improving (I thought) before his leg injury this season, but he makes some plays every now and then that make you scream. He is better defensively, than the general tone of the fans complaints (myself included) over the last few seasons.... When he times his hits well, its great. Great character guy with the fans, and in the lockerroom from what we have seen. He doesn't particularly fight much nowadays (prior concussion stuff), but still mixes it up in general.

Stuart turns 27 next week. We probably shouldn't be talking about his "upside." He's fine as a penalty killer and 3rd/4th line energy guy. Honestly, I will miss him more than I miss Exelby.

From a talent standpoint, Atlanta wins this deal comfortably. However, I'm sure the cap-space implications were important for Toronto, so this is about more than simply the players they get back in the deal for the Buds.

Yes, a late bloomer in the NHL..

Clearly not talking about "upside" the same way you'd say so for an 18 year old prospect. What we saw from him in his stint this year, compared to the prior, I think is more than enough to qualify him as at least a "4th liner, PK specialist"..... that could potentially play steady 3rd line duty....... if he can play the way he did in his 32 games this season, over a full (82 game season) in the NHL.

Basically if he can perform the way he did last season, over a full season, I think that could land him a 3rd line role at best (upside), and at worst a 4th line role.

I hope he gets a solid chance as a third line C for the Leafs. I feel more comfortable with the deal now after seeing the admonishment for him and his PK skills, we need that in TO. Regardless, the Leafs got hosed in this deal

Y'know all the Leaf board posters are saying the same thing, but wouldn't you guys have given up a straight 2nd rounder and nothing else for him? I wouldn't see that as overpayment.

Anyways, you will enjoy Kubina, he got 14 goals with that rocket of a shot. He won our skills competition for hardest shot, and he is a high character guy with a ton of balls. He'll stand up for his teammates, hit a ton, and block every shot he can. He was our most well-rounded dman, both with offense and defense.

No. Exelby had to be moved in order to clear the roster space for Kubina. His one year contract helps in that Arturs Kulda will likely be able to take over his Top 4 spot after one more year in the AHL.

I really like Stuart, more than the GM and coaching staff it seems. I was surprised he did not make the team out of camp, and was pleased with his aggressive PK play. He is good in space, but tends to disappear in traffic.
