The Blackhawks weren't done signing former Red Wings from there, inking Tomas Kopecky to a two-year deal woth $1.2 million a season.

I don't see why we are signing UFA's when we have our own guys in house to sign.

The only thing we have to pay attention is, that we can sign Toews and Kane next year.

Hossa and Kopecky were likely a package deal. Kopecky was mainly responsible for getting Hossa to Detroit last summer, so Hossa is probably returning the favor. That's the only thing I can think of that explains paying Kopecky $1.2M per year, which is a definite overpayment.

I think it is more likely the work of Scotty Bowman than of Hossa. Kopecky is one of those gritty 3rd/4th liners who will muck it up and dish out the hits. Just the type of player Bowman likes.

If he can stay healthy and he has a breakout season, then he could be a decent value. But $1.2M is definitely an overpayment based on his time in Detroit.

Bowman could have had a hand, but that doesn't explain the overpayment. Hossa felt indebted to Kopecky, so what better way to repay the debt than to help him get a fat contract?

I agree that it sounds like a bit of a package deal, but I feel better about the $1.2M when I see that Brashear is making $1.4M per year from the Rangers. I know they're not exactly the same guy, but it makes me feel better. And Walker will cost Tampa $1.8M -- I could talk myself into anything with that number.

He sucks, but oh well. If he came with Hossa, that's fine.

I don't mind the signing as long as this doesn't cost us Eager. I would MUCH rather this money be spent on keeping him around.
