It's funny, Detroit, Rangers, Philly always seems to be right at the edge of the cap, yet they're signing Hossa for a year, acquiring Pronger, talking about trading for Heatley.

Look at Chicago with Hossa. How are they going to afford all those players and sign Kane, Toews, Keith?

Why should we be cautious? We can just buy players out or trade them away like these others teams seem to always do.

If you're able to overpay Gomez and they trade him away two-years later for good prospects, where is the risk exactly in signing players long-term?

There isn't with the current business model.

I love how people think we can afford 2-3 players still.

We have room for one. Just one.

Targets can be;

Gaborik (might not have enough)
Havlat
Kovu
Tanguay
Kovalev
Antropov
Gionta
Beauchemin

That's it. Pick one of those guys and that's all we have cap room for.

So far today + Gomez, we have added 19.35 mil on the cap.
7,3 + 3,8 + 2,25+ 6.

29,05 for everyone else, 1 extra included.

So 19,35 + 29,05 = 48,4

Cap being 56,8 - 48,4 = 8,4

What did I miss?

if it doesn't happen and it stays as it is or only add 1 player then the team isn't any better than it was last year

I never said that, but there is a salary cap. And we only have about $6M available.

Yes we can go over by 10%, but then we have to find a way to get under. Which would involve trading a newly signed player, Plekanec + Price, or Hamrlik (which makes the other signings pointless).

The fact of the matter is, signing Gill & Gomez for a combined $10M is a problem.

There is about 5M$ left, and it's extremely thin considering I would personnaly add a guy like Lang and a winger like Kotalik. I like Spacek and Cammarrelli contracts however. Money way more well spent than on Kovalev and Komisarek.

can you share whatever you're having? We're still as far as were to competing as last year. Changing Koivu for Gomez and potentially Kovy or Tanguay for Cam isn't going to bring us anywhere new. We'll probably have a better first line and better PP with Spacek, but the 2nd/3rd/4th line won't change at all and that is a cause for concern since they did absolutely nothing last year.

Hopefully a new coach, system, new season will help them all.. I just don't see how we can win anything if Plek/Kosts still blow. And we're still way too soft up front.

We need to sign Kovalev ASAP. As we speak right now were way to soft/small up front IMO

Only Plekanec has arbitration rights among our RFAs.

Pleks gets QO after bad season, 1 yr 1.89M

Latendresse can look forward to a Josh Gorges-type contract, perhaps 3 years 1.2 M per year.

D'Agostini gets about 650k on a one-way deal, shuts his mouth and thanks God he now has a guaranteed NHL salary. If he wants more, he's going to have to produce now.

Stewart and Chipchura get about 500k on one-way deals, shuts their mouths and thank God they now have a guaranteed NHL salary. If they want more, they're going to have to prove themselves now.

Well this team is bad. We'll be fighting for a playoffs spot again.

There are ways to circumvent the cap, by giving long term contract. Give a front loaded ~70 M to Havlat 15 years contract. You can buy him out at any time, and only takes ~ 4M cap space. Then sign kovy 4 years 4,5M 4,5M 3M 1M. With minor trades, you can probably fit under the cap.

They could bring back Kovy and Saku for that money. Bringing back Saku would be a great goodwill gesture for the team.

Don't kid yourself people. There is only enough room to add one top-six player. Not two.

My calculations say that we have 6m to spend on a 1st/2nd line winger. That's with 1 spare on forward and defense.

Will Havlat sign for 6? Maybe now that we have Camy and Gomez. If not, Kovy is a good plan B.

I do not see how Koivu would fit really. Unless we want Plekanec to play third line and push Lapierre down to the fouth. Even then who would Koivu play with? Pacioretty and D'Agostini? Very weak imho.

This is why signing a top six winger makes more sense to me.

Even if I cry inside thinking about losing Saku.
