Poile met Ward's money demand, Ward met Poile's length demand...mutual give and take for a guy that really wanted to return and would have probably cost more to replace.

For virtually nothing at that...2.8 million dollars a year for 2 years. How sweet that deal would have been for the Preds.

That is very affordable, clearly he wanted to stay at Carolina with Eric Staal. Who do we have here that could work with him at that level?? Right now, nobody. <sigh>

Yeah I told my brother last night to take him off our radar because he was for sure staying in Carolina and he has many reasons for doing so.

But we can get Ville Peltonen cheaper than that...

Ville is my prediction for our top six forward pickup. Better prediction?

Kotalik makes a lot of sense. Some mediocre potential top 6 forwards - Satan/Afinogenov/Sykora. On defense, Leopold would be nice.

We clearly need a cheap middling 2nd/3rd liner that might improve with ice time. Kotalik is a good choice. Chad LaRose is probably cheaper (for a reason) and might be a gamble.

In a video on NP.com, Poile was asked by the media if we were going to sign anyone else. Poile said that he felt good with the guys we have for the top 6, whether that be Ward or guys from Milwaukee.

He said we are now only looking for a veteran defenseman and that signing will likely be in a few days.

Well I was about to make my top 3 before I seen the post above yours, were Poile is satisfied with the top 5 forwards we have. Good ole' "stand pat" Poile. I'd hope he atleast called some of the available forwards left agents to see what the askin price would be and if they're interested in coming to Nashville but I doubt it. So what experienced blueliners are out there? Leopold, Aucoin, Schneider, Skrastins, or Boynton so which one would you guys want as far as our defense I really don't care. I'm just glad to be rid of de"pylon"Vires.

I was just coming in here to ask if that would be something we should think about. DeVries knows the system, we know what he does(which ain't much) and we can put him on the 3rd pair and have him mentor our kids. Im sure he could be had for the minimum plus some bonuses.

Hell if you want I can mentor our young blueline players on how to let a forward skate around you. I think we can get real pylons for much cheaper than him.

You guys want to know something that will make you feel good about Erat this up coming season? He'll make 20k more than Marian Hossa, hope Erat can score 40 goals this season like Hossa will. Ok I'm depressed again, good night I'll perhaps see you guys on here in the morning to see that Havlat signed with the Wild.

Yeah, I meant good gamble. It's one I would take since you could slide Jones, LaRose and Ward around in different slots to see what worked.

If Poile isn't signing another forward, what do we have at this point for our opening night?

sully-arnott-dumont
erat-legwand-ward
jones-wilson/o'reilly-hornqvist
tootoo-smithson-philstrom
belak jessiman

I must be forgetting something. Tell me I'm forgetting something. Surely at least a third line guy is in the cards. That's at least 3 forwards that haven't proved they can even play in the nhl.

Cap floor is what, $40 million? Mid is around $48 million? So we'll be somewhere between $40 million and $46 ish million.

We're at 38,912,500 without Jones, Pihlstrom, O'Reilly and a defenseman.

If we sign Jones, Pihlstrom and O'Reilly to small pay raises.. we're looking at $41 million ish.

That gives us a little bit of money to sign a cheap vet on the blueline.

So we'd look like:

Sullivan - Arnott - Dumont
Erat - Legwand - Ward
Jones - O'Reilly - Pihlstrom
Belak - Smithson - Tootoo

Weber - Suter
Hamhuis - Klein
Sulzer - FA Signing

Rinne
Ellis

The only way we'll get an upgrade up top is if we reduce some salary.. ala Hamhuis and/or Ellis.

Antropov? We have just enough loose cash to sign him.

If we signed Williams... I think the vomiting sensation I managed to quell when we picked Ryan Ellis would be uncontrollable. Samuelsson has had tons of beneficial matchups in Detroit and has played with top-flight talent that we don't have for him to work with. Kotalik would be okay.

Not true. Hossa is making $7.9M next year. The reason his cap hit is so low is because its a 12 year contract and he'll retire before the contract ever expires.

the fact that we believe we're "done" up front has me angry enough to write a couple of letters. seriously.

We were a mediocre team last season, and all we've done is re-sign two question marks. I have no problem with bringing back Ward and\or Sullivan...in fact, I hoped we would do just that...but I was foolish enough to think\hope that they realized we'd still be short a top six forward, and sitting on those two would mean that we'd be banking on Ward having another season like last, and our only fall back option is the same as it was last season....hope that one of Jones, Hornqvist and now Wilson is "ready." And even if that does work out, it leaves us with perhaps the weakest bottom six in the league.

It's hard to see us as anything but a lottery team, next year...and unfortunately, 2010's draft is considerably weaker than the last few.

Antropov just signed with the Thrashers.

Looks like our best options for anything resembling a powerforward are Fedotenko and Bertuzzi.

Looking at the numbers, I'm not sure how people think we have more money to spend. My calculcations have us at about $44M and that doesn't include a cheap veteran dman. One of those will probably cost 1.5 - 2M so that puts us right below $46M.

Assuming all RFAs accept their qualifying offer, here are the salary breakdowns:
Code:
Jones* 1.0332
Pihlstrom* 0.6248
O'Reilly* 0.5863
Hornqvist 0.7133
Wilson* 0.8750
Franson 0.6938

*Estimates
Cap-central has our salary at 39,625,833

Add in all the above players and we get ~44,152,400

Plus another dman puts us at $46M

Sullivan-Arnott-Dumont
Ward-Legwand-Erat
Jones-O'Reilly-Pihlstrom
Tootoo-Smithson-Belak
Hornqvist-Wilson

Weber-Suter
Hamhuis-Klein
Sulzer-FA dman
Franson

Rinne-Ellis

And that's all folks, unless I miscalculated something

We are at $41 million ish with signing Jones, Pihlstrom, and O'Reilly to small price increases and Wilson and Hornqvist in Milwaukee.

We won't spend past $46 million as we cannot spend past the mid point (48) and we have to leave room for call ups. That leaves us around $1.5-2.5 million for a defenseman and that is all we will sign according to Poile.

Which puts us a bit over the floor and with next season likely to be a terrible attendance season, we will struggle to make money.

I agree.. we won't sign a forward because we cannot afford one unless we see Hamhuis or Ellis traded. And then we still have to pay someone else.

I don't think Poile is bluffing.
