Larose update...

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/canes/...ime-to-move-on

Quote:

Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said Wednesday night that it now appears unlikely free agent forward Chad LaRose would be signed to a new contract.

“It’s not going to happen,” Rutherford said Wednesday night. “I informed (Morris) that we had another deal we were working on, that I was giving him a courtesy call. He said he would run everything by Chad and call back in an hour. I waited but they never called back.

“Obviously they have a deal somewhere else. So we’re working on signing another free agent. It’s time to move on.”

If you break it down, it's really an 8 year 60 million dollar deal or so (7.5 per year) and they just tacked on the extra 4 years to lower the cap hit by a couple million. I don't think Hossa has any intention of playing until he's 42, I think they added the extra 4 years to give Chicago a break.

My real question is if other GMs are going to start copying this, particularly with the big-name guys.

Wonder if we could see more 30 year-olds signing 12-14 year contracts that are massively frontloaded and have no intention of finishing the deal.
I'm pretty sure Kane and Toews are RFAs after this upcoming season, too.

What Chicago is doing is really, really odd.

They have Toews, Kane, Ladd, Barker, Seabrook, and Keith who are going to need raises in the relatively near-future and they're throwing around long-term deals like candy.

I didn't expect Recchi to sign today but I haven't heard much other than Boston.

So who has the better contract value? Flyers with Jones or Canadians with Gill. I'm honestly leaning toward the Flyers...

Which means someone like Sharp could be headed elsewhere.

Which would be STUPID.....The Madden signing is fine, its only one year. Its really just the Hossa signing that is crazy. Its a good cap hit for him but 12 years is nuts!

That's the beauty of it though, they're betting that Hossa is going to retire at 38-39 and they're probably right.

Byfuglien and Seabrook are RFA's after the 2010-2011 Season

FlyersJunky, if you are out there... As I sensed earlier per our discussion...

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/..._Capitals.html

Quote:

Knuble said he was disappointed that he was not able to work something out with the Flyers, but felt that their offer just wasn't good enough.

“The terms were the same, a 2-year deal, the same terms, but the salary that [general manager Paul Holmgren] could offer, based on his cap situation just wasn’t what we were looking, wasn’t even fair,” he said.

“It’s only been less than 24 hours I figured out I wasn’t going to be in Philly. All things considered I feel good, yesterday not so good. But today good because you have got to move on. All things considered, you have to move on with it.

“We drove back to Michigan [Tuesday] and we stopped in Ohio and somewhere in Ohio I got the call that [Holmgren’s] final offer was. We didn’t feel it was very reasonable and it's just kind of the way it worked out.

“I was very disappointed that it wasn’t going to work. It was kind of a sleepless night, [Tuesday] night in some strange hotel with my family trying to make our way back to Michigan.”

This is eerily similar to what happened to the Flyers. We couldn't keep everybody we wanted because of an overflow of young talent needing decent raises whilst still having other large contracts on board. The Hawks are going to have to make some regretful moves in the next year or two.

The way I interpreted his comments from yesterday (posted today) was that he understood the team's cap situation in the Spring and how that would affect him. But when he was told the same thing post-Lupul/Pronger trade, his reaction was different.

Saku Koivu talking to Minnesota, per the Wild's beat writer...

http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/...igning-havlat/

Quote:
Star Tribune Sources: Wild close to signing Havlat

According to multiple NHL sources, the Wild is close to signing dynamic free-agent winger Martin Havlat.

Havlat, 28, scored a career-high 77 points last season with Chicago in 81 games. It’s unclear as to whether this gets done tonight or in the wee hours of the morning, but barring some sort of breakdown, I have been told by impeccable sources that Havlat has cut his list to one team — and that’s Minnesota.

According to sources, the Wild also continues to be in negotiations with free-agent center Saku Koivu, although it’s unclear how close that is. Because of the time in Finland, it could go into tomorrow.

The Wild and Havlat’s agent have been working on this contract for hours.

in his interview on comcast he seemd a little upset that homer had been telling him they couldn't pay him but then went and took on an addt'l $2MM for pronger.

i understand knubles position but i wouldn't expect the flyers to go 2 x 2.8MM for him.
