Really? More than 22 minutes of ice time per game last year; ten goals and 24 assists; 10th overall amongst defenseman in total number of shifts, 21st overall in shifts per game. That's bottom pairing?

I'm not saying Phoenix's defense is bad by any means, just that they really didn't much to improve it.

Sauer and Michalek are very underrated defenseman. If Yandle can develop his offense and be less of a liability on defense then Phoenix will have something to talk about.

No wonder Calgary got punted in the first round.

I'm not saying its the best in the league, or even in the top half, I'm just saying its an improvement on having Hale and Klee as regulars.

Yeah, actually. Aucoin had a below average Quality of Competition Rating of -.02, meaning that he didn't play against very tough competition. Meanwhile, he surrendered the second highest amount of even strength goals against per 60 minutes on Calgary backline.

He's average defensively and has a good shot. Not much of a puck mover and little physical play. That's bottom pairing in my book.

Hale, definitely. Klee was actually pretty solid.

I never understood why players who have 1-2 yrs left in them go play for teams that have no chance in hell to get anywhere near the cup. Is it about the money? Climate? Having a chance to teach young guys? I dunno, for me it'd always be about winning.

I see a fairly solid mix there... nothing outstanding, but nothing terrible either.

Michalek is amazing though.

Good luck with this, most overpaid player on the Flames last year. Anything over 1.5M is crazy overpayment.

Ya but Keenan was coaching blind with some of his ice time decisions. Like Dion on and Bert on the ice with a minute to protecting the lead in a one goal hockey game.

Aucoin is decent, but not worth a lot of money. He is very slow and in today's limited clutch and grab game he is exposed often.

1 year deal? Yay, Aucoin will get to be featured heavily on trade deadline day!

it's all about a couple more yrs of paycheck...it's not like they all have other skills.

Also, how can he be choosy? Are there that many teams interested?

Aucoin was just overpaid in the last few years...He is neither great nor bad...at this point he can be average anywhere from 4th to 6th in the lineup....with occasional relief on the PP if needed but dont expect much contribution there neither.

Aucoin is still capable of being a #4 defenseman, not as mobile as he used to be but still solid in his own end and still good offensively

Aucoin and Vandermeer have played together in the past... and I would expect him to step up into your top 4... he is very underrated on these boards

please stop quoting that stupid ****ing site... this just further proves it's just a load of **** made up by some Oiler fan (and it was made by an Oiler fan)... Aucoin spent a large chunk of the season paired with Regehr... but according to that site he didn't play against tough competition... but that site says the same thing about Phaneuf... claiming that he doesn't play against quality opponents... so if Aucoin isnt playing against tough opponents despite playing with Regehr and Phaneuf doesn't play against tough opponents... did Calgary just play Sarich with Vandermeer, Pardy and Giordano against all the top opponents? that site has no credibility at all...

SERIOUSLY??? Does he have an ex-wife that moved the kids down here, or something? I mean, what gives? I just can't believe that there wasn't some team out there willing to give him a longer deal, and/or a better chance of winning. Maybe he LOVES golfing or perhaps has long planned on retiring in Phoenix. I don't know. Seems kind of fishy, honestly.

I'm not sure how good Sauer is anymore, but that is a pretty decent group, should give Phoenix a chance to compete every night.
You have the best defenseman on the team since Numminen left slotted in the six hole? Zbynek Michalek has been our undisputed number one guy for the last four years.

if Fedoruk's contract was 1/2 price I would take him on Calgary
