"The Piece" is his nickname that he aquired during the playoffs this year. It's a joke because of a flub he had durring an interview. It's a great nickname.

I didnt mean he was "the piece" the Kings need or anything like that.

Good for Scuds. I hope he got a nice deal... he deserves it.

The Kings just got an excellent third pairing defenseman who could probably play on the second, if needs be, who is rock-solid in his own end. Scuderi has a great stick, is an excellent shot-blocker and is fantastic on the penalty kill. He was lights out, especially, in 5 on 3 situations for the Penguins last year.

Don't expect a physical presence from Scuderi, however. And his game beyond his own blueline is non-existent. His offensive capability is pretty much nil. His skating is also mediocre, at the very best.

In any case, he should be a good fit on the Kings and provide them with at least some help in taking the pressure off of some of their younger players. It's a shame the Penguins couldn't afford to retain his services but he had become a Piece they just couldn't afford to keep for what he provided.

Scud's ain't a kid. He's 31. He was the Pens best kept secret the last few years imo. I don't think people realized how good he was until recently in the playoffs. He's great on the PK. He's got a great stick. He was a +23 in the regular season last year. He isn't perfect, but he's a solid vet to mentor the young guys in LA.

Let's see,

Doughty (R)
Quincey (L)
Johnson (L)
Greene (R)
O'Donnell (L)

is the mix he will be added to, so I would think Scuderi is a left shot, so he is either on the 1st pairing with Doughty to give him more room to roam, or on the 2nd pairing with Johnson for the same reason. Maybe late in a game he plays with Greene as a shutdown pairing. Someone will be playing their off side.

Yeah. Pens couldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. Well deserved for "The Piece". LA got a very dependable 3-6 defenseman. Will prove his weight in gold in helping mature that very promising LA blueline.

Agreed I love Scuds, but I don't think I would want to give him that much either.

bad move of RS to wait. The best alternatives are all off the market now (except Beauchemin, who will cost too much)

I'm glad Shero didn't overpay, but it would have been nice to have given Scuderi's deal to Zanon.

It's gonna come down to around 3.2 mill for a 2nd line winger and a 6/7 dman. Unless we could move some salaries.

Are you talking about Scuderi? I've never seen him throw a hipcheck.

I'm not sure the Pens can even afford what Zanon got. They have no cap room and I doubt they'll spend $2mm for a bottom pairing guy at this point.

Not really. Or at least, not too often. Scuderi does a fine job neutralizing attacking forwards more often than not but he'll hardly ever do it by throwing big hits. His game is about positioning and smarts.

He's probably going to play the left side on the second pairing to allow Jack Johnson to play right. Scuderi's defensive abilities will help cover for Johnson's... still developing defensive game that Terry Murray said he needed to iron out. That type of pairing brings to mind the Norstrom - Blake combination from years back where each guy complimented their respective strengths/weaknesses.
