Because he hasn't made any sexy signings?

Or because he's giving away 2nd and 3rd rounders for nothing? Oh wait...

I like the signing, this one seems a bit more Moneypuck. Samuelsson is a proven winner, with an Olympic gold in 2006, a World Championship gold in 2006, and a Stanley Cup in 2008. He's a very capable two-way player who's not afraid to shoot the puck.

I have been calling for the Nucks to pick him up for a few years now, to be shot aside always by people like NFITO:

Sedins-Samuelsson
Burrows-Kesler-Demitra
Raymond-Hodgson-Bernier
Hordichuk-Johnson-Rypien
Hansen

Edler-?
Mitchell-Salo
?-Bieksa

Luongo

I assume this is part of something bigger?

The 3 year term really took me by surprise. I guess he can be a stop gap 2nd liner this year and then drop down to a 3rd/4th liner as Hodgson and co start coming up?

Regardless, this better not hurt my boy Wellwood's chances of re-signing, otherwise I am going to kick Samuelsson really really really hard on his outer right ankle.

Hey, I guess Gillis read our FA thread last night.

Seriously though, maybe the Sedins brought him up as a potential complementary player? He has played with them before.

Samuelsson brings some things this team needs, especially being a shooter. That said, there has to be something else on the way because the last thing this team needed was another winger.

samuelsson had a lot of success with the twins at international competitions.

not fast (skating reminds me of lumme, where hes riding a horse sometimes) but quite strong on the puck, and has a very hard shot.

not bad depends on money

If you fail to see the huge leap we made in the pro scouting dept. from Nonis to Gillis I am not sure what to say ...

I don't see Gillis being like Nonis at all. Gillis IMO is a well-balanced GM. Conservative but opportunistic - not stupid like Gainey/Sather. Could you imagine how fans would react? There would be revolts!

Gillis has done far more to polish our drafting and development - that will arguably be his biggest impact - down the road.

Depending on the dollar amount I like it. Could give some flexibility if Burrows doesn't pan out with the Sedins all season and opens up a spot for a guy like Raymond to be traded for help.

*shrug* I don't remember Dave Nonis signing an Olympic gold medal winner or a Stanley Cup champion free agent.

I'm guessing he's sort of a medium term "stop gap" guy which enables Gillis to wait for Sundin. If Sundin says negative - then we still have cap space to pickup an offensive defenseman.

Barring a huge cap hit for Samuelsson of course.

Outside of Hodgson and Schroeder they are all Nonis picks so I think this signals Grabner and Raymond are being dangled in trade talks for a defenseman.

I left Hanson out because he brings more to the table than just scoring potential.

Well, considering his last UFA contract tendered to a Swede....

I'm fine with the signing as long as we don't **** with the Sedin Sedin Burrows line. I'm pretty "meh" on Samuelsson but I guess he'll be good on the second or third line. I don't know why we'd sign a fringe top six player when we have youth competing for that spot. I'm thinking there's going to be a trade soon. Oh well, I still want Sundin to sign here.

Meh... He's kind of a frustrating player to watch. Lots of shots directly into the goalie.

Perhaps playing with the Sedins will help him. At least we have options.

Then he's definitely a Raymond replacement.

Ideally if Sundin comes back and we can pawn Demitra off to the NYI for a late pick or something...that would set us up for

I'm looking forward to having a player who's played for a team like Detriot.

I'll repeat what I said on the main board. He'll probably match Sundin's Vancouver production at a quarter of the price

I think Samuelsson signing shows signs at a potential trade coming... Someone we thought would take a youth spot on the team perhaps. Hansen? Raymond? Wellwood? package deal for someone...

(my guess is not Raymond as Gillis speaks highly of him - but that could be smoke used to hide the trade intentions)

The options is the key point I think. This is another useful player that builds some depth for the organization and makes it easier to part with a Raymond or Grabner or Hansen in a subsequent deal.

You can't judge a GM a signing or trade at a time.

I guess it would depend on how much Sundin wants. Perhaps he'll take a fairly small salary to return, especially considering we paid him so much last year.

It will be interesting to see what his cap hit will be. here was the situation in Detroit:
Quote:
But general manager Ken Holland said Thursday he's "not optimistic" that he'll be able to keep unrestricted free agent Mikael Samuelsson, who is seeking a long-term deal averaging upwards of $2 million a year. The Wings want to keep Samuelsson closer to $1.5 million a year.
http://www.freep.com/article/2009070...out+Samuelsson

If the deal is around $2 million per it is a good signing.
