I have no problem with the 3 year deal. It's not like he'd sign with a no trade clause, so if enough kids develop nicely to push him out of a spot you can just move him.

Samuelsson brings some things this team needs, especially being a shooter. That said, there has to be something else on the way because the last thing this team needed was another winger.
That was one of the first things that came to mind with me as well - RH shot also.

Some quotes from Red Wing fans:

Quote:
Good luck Canucks fans, you're going to hate him. Sure he scores some goals out of nowhere, but my god is he frustrating to watch.

HAHA!

he was usually a 3rd line winger with hudler/filppula, helm, cleary. He also manned the point on our 2nd pp unit which he was quite terrible at and I am so happy he won't be there next year to create horrible giveaways and bad keep ins.
Doesn't get me too excited but hopefully he fits in.

No, mainly because he's starting to sign plugs for top 6 roles after creating cap issues by signing Swedish players to 6M dollar contracts.

Almost identical stats to Bulis' prior to him coming to Vancouver.

There was an article about Sundin in the paper today (sorry, this is OT) but JP Barry mentioned that Sundin's good experience in Vancouver would give them an advantage for a contract for next year.

On the radio Gillis seemed to be super keen on bringing Sundin back, going as far saying something like 'he can play on my team any day', so I don't think this shuts the door.

Wouldn't surprise me if Gillis told the Sedin's his plan to sign Samuelsson on his trip to Sweden.

could you refresh my memory here and provide any posts where I said this?

Not that I'm disagreeing... I have never been that high on Samuelsson, but I don't think I ever dismissed him overall.... I do remember having a discussion (it might have been with you even) about how Detroit was not going to move him during the season as a salary dump, when he was an effective player for them and a solid playoff performer.... I do remember having that discussion with several posters, convinced that Detroit would never move him.

I also remember saying in the past that he would be one of the guys that wouldn't return to Detroit after his contract was done, because of cap situations.

But since you did bring up my name as saying something I don't remember saying, I'd hope you have the posts to back them up?

sorry, decided to go with my posting history here to find out what I did actually say about him:

my "moneyball" pick for UFA next season... Mikael Samuelsson.

Previous chemistry with the Sedins... can think the same type of game and is the style of player that should work with the Sedins (big, right handed shot, natural right winger, has played with them before)... he's also a reliable player having played in a good system. On pace for 23 goals, 50+ points, playing just over 15mins/night in a depth role.... shouldn't be expense as a UFA, and with Detroit's contract situations, he will likely not be brought back.

granted you re-sign the Sedins... Samuelsson could be a very good signing to play on their wing next season, and should come at a reasonable cost.

3 years, $2.5 million per for Samuelsson.

I'm pretty 'meh' on this move.

Actually I think Bulis was a pretty good signing. Our PK suffered when he left.

He is one of those guys that can play top 6 and not look out of place but is defensively responsible enough to play on a checking line. Think of this as a Taylor Pyatt replacement.

Not a big fan at that price. Under $2 million I would have been happy.

Hmmm - I like this move slightly less if it's $2.5MM per.

I've been holding out slim hope for this too. Doubt it happens, but it would be nice.

If true, that's a bit expensive. I was hoping for $2M.

2.5M is a good price for the free agent market. You probably can't find that many more non-entry level top-six wingers playing for less in the NHL.

And to put it into perspective. Shawn Horcoff.

not a fan of this deal at $2.5mill/yr for 3 yrs... about $700K/yr more than I'd like to see, and a year too long.

personally, I'd rather have just gone with our young guys and given Grabner a long look at camp.

Bizarre - truly bizarre. Samuelsson is nothing more then Hansen with some years under his belt. I have no idea why Hansen could not have filled that role for more than 1.5 million per year less.

This team is starting to look way worse than I had hoped. Top 6 now minus Mats, add 40 pt man Samuelsson???? What the hell is Gillis thinking? 3 years at 2.5 per year?

I actually miss Nonis right now. The Canucks needed a more offensive threat up front - a guy like Kovalev or Tanguay - not freaking Samuelsson.

Brutal.........real bold move their Mike. Brutal.

Probably .5 million more than ideal, but I can live with it.

Yeah, it's probably market value but with their available cap space and the players they have on their team, I don't think it makes a ton of sense to pay market value over 3 years to a 32 year old 2nd/3rd line winger. They must think that Samuelsson will be a good complementary player with the Sedins, it's the only way it makes sense.

Not sure if he will MATCH but hopefully he will be a replacement for Raymond/Grabner or hopefully Demitra assuming we are trading one or more of them.
