Yeah, it's probably market value but with their available cap space and the players they have on their team, I don't think it makes a ton of sense to pay market value over 3 years to a 32 year old 2nd/3rd line winger. They must think that Samuelsson will be a good complementary player with the Sedins, it's the only way it makes sense.
But they already have a good complementary player for them - you know - that guy that scored 28 goals with them last year? The guy they just gave a 4 year deal to? WTF is Gillis doing? Unreal. Brutal.
Bizarre - truly bizarre. Samuelsson is nothing more then Hansen with some years under his belt. I have no idea why Hansen could not have filled that role for more than 1.5 million per year less.
This team is starting to look way worse than I had hoped. Top 6 now minus Mats, add 40 pt man Samuelsson???? What the hell is Gillis thinking? 3 years at 2.5 per year?
I actually miss Nonis right now. The Canucks needed a more offensive threat up front - a guy like Kovalev or Tanguay - not freaking Samuelsson.
Brutal.........real bold move their Mike. Brutal.
Samuelsson brings a lot more than Hansen does. Veteran presence, a cup ring, all that.
I'm not a huge fan of this move but the sky's not falling

I love Burrows but there is almost no chance he repeats that performance with the Sedins this year.
That said, it doesn't mean that he wouldn't be a fit there.

A cup ring? Cmon - that's so overrated. Maybe if he was a front line player that was a material cog in the Wings winning the cup - but he was at best a complimentary guy that could have been easily changed out. This is a horrendous signing that in effect eats up over 1.5 million in precious cap space that did not need to be lost.

Burrows has shown chemistry on a few lines so I don't see this as a big deal. No lines are set for an entire year anyway. This gives us scoring depth and flexibility - all good things to have. The only thing I don't care for as much is the $2.5MM cap hit but since it's still July we have to wait and see how things play out - things are going to look much different come Sept I think.
BTW - Burrows didn't score 28 goals exclusively with the Sedins last year. Remember how excited everyone was with the Kesler/Burrows combo the first 2 months of the season?
I trust Mike Gillis and I think he knows what he is doing.
Why does everyone always post this type of thing? Thus far Gillis has done nothing to inspire this sort of unquestioning faith (ie Sundin 2 years at 20M, Demitra, etc).
I'm not that stoked on this deal, we've already been down the Bulis/Isbister/Pyatt route before, I guess history does indeed repeat itself.
On the plus side it leaves us about 4M for a replacement for Ohlund.
Well considering he's a UFA, and considering he probably had at least a couple teams interested, it required a slight overpayment to land him.
a $0.3-0.5 mil overpayment is something i can definitely except. very reasonable all things considered...
~ 15% of the players signed during this period are actually signed for their true value.... and those players aren't switching teams.
(76% of stats on the internet are made up, but only 32% of the ones on HF)

Gillis is an idiot, officially.
the guy's still been there, and knows what it takes for a team to win, and that experience, no matter how much of a role he had, is vital.
cmon dude its a beautiful day, and you're gonna start it off by getting worked up about this?
Complimentary player that can put up 20 goals without huge minutes, has proven chemestry with a couple of your players and has a ring... I dont see what there is to complain about. Yah, its a little more that I would have liked to have seen paid for him, but given the market the number makes sense. Gives the team more top 9 depth and some flexibility with respect to how the young guys actually develop. Not a bad signing at all. Most of all, I doubt this is THE move. I think the next move(s) will put this more into perspective.

Sure - but the LAST thing the Canucks needed to be spending money on was a player to play with the Sedins. Burrows showed that he can be that guy - this is totally unnecessary. Given the cap hit here, and the fact that cap space is so precious right now, I'd say that this is easily the WORST signing by the Canucks since the inception of the cap.
Doesn't get me too excited but hopefully he fits in.
Pfft, don't put too much stock into the gloating "HAHA!" post of farewell. Look at the Canucks board, whenever we trade someone they suddenly become the world's worst player. A perfect example would be Bernier.
He isn't the greatest player. But he throws a lot of hits, he works hard, and he stands up for his teamates. Yes, he misses easy scoring chances, but he has potential to develop.
Were he to be traded, you would see a lot of Canuck fans going off on him saying "he's terrible! He has no hands! What a bust! Isbister v 2.0! Enjoy wasting your time on him!" etc etc.
I'm not saying Sameulsson will be amazing, but I would wait before getting down and out over some random Wings fans parting comments.
Not a fan of Samuelsson at all. 3 years at $7.5mil makes me even less of a fan. Very questionable signing with the amount of young players that could fill this role for a fraction of the cost.
On the flipside, if Samuelsson can develop chemistry with the twins we may have a guy that can score 25-30 goals on their wing. The fact he's got an excellent RH shot could potentially make this work.
I'm guessing Gillis or Vigneault want to get Burrows away from the Sedins? I'm not sure why?
I really don't get this deal at all. That's money we could've used elsewhere for higher priority needs. I have to believe Gillis is setting a trade up in the near future.

Knee meet Jerk. Have you already forgotten about Mark Chouinard?
Samuelsson has also shown chemistry with the Sedins during International competition. You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket.
