I seriously doubt Dean ever goes the offer sheet route. Especially after the "If you go after my RFA players, I'll poach yours with my cap room" threat.

How much is fair? 2.5-3 per for 4-5 yrs? 3-3.5 for 3 years? Is that enough to outprice the Hawks ability to match? Not really sure what Vertseeg will command.

I'd just as soon trade for him then sign him.

Depends what Deano would be willing to give him. I mean, they did pick up a few extra picks in the draft. All these kids can't play. If the compensation isn't too much, I'd give it a go.

Just got this link from a friend of mine: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283634

''Chicago tendered qualifying offers to several key players this week, including Kris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer, however the investigation underway is to determiner whether the qualifying offers were filed correctly.

If not, there is the remote possibility the qualifying offers could be ruled invalid and the players listed above, conceivably, could be deemed unrestricted free agents because of the blunder.''

I just read that story... that would be pretty funny.

My guess is the league won't allow it, or even if they did, most of the players would resign with the Hawks anyways, but Barker and Versteeg hitting UFA would be priceless.

Perhaps no trade or offer sheet will be necessary!

It would also be really strange to see a calder candidate go straight to UFA... I can only imagine the bidding war for a guy like that...

I agree with all of that.

I don't expect them to lose these guys over this, but wouldn't be smart to get the QO out to your top RFAs the very first day you are allowed to do so?

Those players very well could go unrestricted if the Qualifying Offers are deemed invalid, there is a precedent for this.
