I doubt anyone is going to make a long term commitment to be Luongo's backup. Sabourin and Labarbera did it right. They played well enough in the limited action they got and it got them contracts elsewhere. I'm sure Raycroft is thinking if he plays 10-15 good games, someone else will take a shot at him next year.

really disappointed MG didn't keep LaBarbera. he didn't play a lot of games, but he looked completely solid in the ones he did, and he seemed like a great character guy. I guess 1 mil was more than MG wanted to pay for a backup in LaBarbera, so Raycroft better be less than that.

You'll see how different your team plays in front of him - it's scary.
Sounds like every backup we've had for the last 3 years

Not great, not horrible. He's shown flashes of brilliance, but a lot of brainfarts on bad teams has probably destroyed his confidence. He could be a Ryan Walter project.

It wasn't just about money, Labarbera wanted to go to a team where he'd have a chance to play more games.

At least Labarbera was cool... He was a Metallica fan.

Raycroft is just... Raycroft.

I'm not saying it will work out the same (I doubt Raycroft will be good), but this thread reminds me of when we acquired Labarbera. Everyone talked about how bad he was and he turned out decent.

Who did you guys expect as a backup? Fernandez? Raycroft had played on some pretty bad teams lately and he can't be any worse than Sanford or Danny "I can't win a game" Sabourin. Schneider would be a pretty expensive backup and it is likely he is moved regardless.

Just because he's not starting doesn't mean he's not a liability as a backup. You can't afford to throw away even a point or two and Raycroft's been one of the worst goalies in the league for a couple years now.

He's a downgrade on Curtis Sanford, and that's saying something.

Thanks

Maybe a higher draft pick for you this year, good luck with that!

Agreed. If he plays 12 games and goes 6-6 I don't see how that's any worse then any other backup the Nucks have had in the past few years.
In fact, he has the potential do to better than that too... maybe, just maybe....

Labarbera got a bad rep because he lets in groaners from time to time but on average he's one of the better backup goalies in the league (aside from 1a/1b type situations).

Raycroft is just a bad goalie.

dirty dirty signing.
Home grown leafs fan here, with nucks as my number two, and this is just pitiful...what happened to Schnieder!?
Raycroft (or Razor when he's good two out of 60 games a year) is terrible...trust me, I had to watch him for two seasons as the Leafs goalie, he got booed out of the city

Labarbera seemed like a very good locker room guy which is paramount for a backup. Hopefully Raycroft will fit in like Labs did.

Great move imo.

He made $800K last yr... he should make no more than that here.
He gets the opportunity to learn from the best which should make him a better player.
He's more than capable of playing well for the 15-17 games he should get.
He had a hot start to last season before the team in front of him fell apart... i think he started out something like 10-1. Crap goaltenders can't just go 8-1 or 10-1 or whatever he did.
Will be playing behind the best team he's ever had in front of him.

The potential is there for this to be very solid signing for the canucks.

Remember, he's not coming in here to start... just has to be decent... which he is.

That alone makes me glad LaBarbera is gone.

For a couple years now? 06-07 he had a winning season on a bad Toronto team. You can't blame him for last season, Colorado was one of the worst teams in the league.

Raycroft could paint his mask with a collage of all the past Canuck greats. There could be Bure, Linden, Smyl, McLean, uhh...Babych, maybe Murzyn...ah, **** me.

There isn't exactly a long list of experienced goalies lining up to play maybe 15 games if they're lucky.

When the terms are announced we will see if this is a good or bad signing.

If he gets paid $800,000 Gillis overpaid. Every penny now counts against us getting that defencemen I think everyone wants.
