Will the one year deal see O'brien to UFA status?

about 3-400K more than I expected, still nice to have him back, he's a solid 10-12 minute per game bottom pair guy.

Its a one year deal...

Usually you have to sacrifice a bit of money on shorter term deals.

The one-year may have been at his request, though - he's 27 at the end of next season, so he'll be a UFA. Amount seems a bit high, that'll eat an extra half million of cap room.

I'm fine with the money. Realistically, who is out there that you would want on the bottom pair that would actually sign for less?

SOB is still young at 25 and has potential to develop his all round game. I really liked what I saw from him this year and love the surliness he brings to the team. Willing to go through walls (sometimes refs) for his teammates, too.

Don't think so. IIRC, you have to be 27 by July 1st to qualify for UFA status, and O'Brien doesn't turn 27 until August 9th, 2010.

It's a bit more than I would have thought he'd get but it's a reasonable price considering the circumstances.

Nice, that answers my first question.

Seeing how O'brien will get to be a UFA next year, I would have liked to see Gillis save a couple hundred grand of this contract.

Would have preferred $1.5M, but nonetheless it's good to have him back.

If thats the case then I'd have preferred Gillis going with a 2 year deal trying to lower the cap hit...

But oh well, can't complain too much. He brings quite a bit of toughness to the team.

Most importantly, it seems as if AV can really whip him into shape. When he says something stupid, or takes dumb penalties, it seems AV can really straighten him out.

Since when is 1.5/6 million for a #5/6 guy overpayment?? I don't get you guys sometimes. Didn't Krajicek get a little under that?

a 2 year deal wouldn't have lowered the cap hit, he would just be making 3.2 over 2 years instead.

This deal gives the canucks the opportunity to see if he develops well and if so they can lock him up before UFA.

Yeah, my bad, read his birthdate as April, it's August.
