So if and only if they are able to trade Dupuis to make up that cap room, and Kovalev is willing to take around 2.2M so the Pens could sign ANOTHER Dman that the need, is the only way Kovy will be making a return to Pittsburgh. The Pens have, according to NHLNumbers, 3.137M in cap room. So trading Dupuis for picks, using Lovejoy and Curry for 1.4M is a wash. Then the Pens could sign OKT for about 800K I would think. That would leave only 2.2M about so thats the only way Kovy comes.

So just about no chance for Kovalev.
This matches up 100% with my understanding. If Kovalev is willing to take less than 50 cents on the dollar just says after turning down a fair market offer from the team he's played with for years, more power to the Pens. But like you, I just don't see it being a plausible scenario.

And as "washed up" as he is he'd still be on a lot of teams' first lines. In fact I see no difference in his game from this year compared to 4 yrs ago. He doesn't rely on his speed to make plays so I think he still has 3-4 yrs left in him.
What about that Kovalev saying: 1 good year, 2 bad, 1 good, 1 bad, 2 good, 5 bad...if he has 4 years left, those are adding to his last season's bad. 1+4=5, so get ready for another disapointing season...And why bring in Heatley to this? lol

It would be, but it's also next to impossible.

Unlike Koivu who is obviously shown of slowing down, Kovalev is still in shape to play on any top line in the NHL.

The problem is that some people (espescially some ignorants Habs fans), thinks that Kovalev is so skilled that he can make anyone on his lines better but that is completely untrue. Kovalev is a complementary player. He needs to be put with good linemates to be productive.

Just an quick example. When he played with Plekanec and Andrei Kostitsyn in 07-08, both of them had their best season, so Kovalev played like a monster in that season. Last season, Plekanec sucked pretty much all year and A. Kostitsyn was very inconsistent so Kovalev did not produced at all, and when he is not producing, he starts to find out solution by himself and playing more selfishly, that is when you see the ''lazy'' Kovalev.

And then, Gainey decides to put Kovalev on a line with Tanguay and Koivu, that line litteraly exploded. Kovalev got 16 pts (8g/8a) in 7 games.

So if a team decides to sign him, they better put Kovalev with their best center so they can get the best of Kovalev, and the best Kovalev could easily worth 6-7M$ since Kovalev could easily score 30 goals+ and be a PPG player.
