Weird. I thought he was Sabres property.

Looks like a good signing. Big Abbotsford defenceman will a long stride and good passing skills. Still pretty young, 23, and was a 2nd round pick in 2004. Was he injred most of last year? Apparently he only played 13 games.

He was an RFA and wasn't qualified by the Sabres.

Is anyone actually reporting this? Because it could be just another glitch in the NHL's website, wouldn't be the first time...

Who?

Oh please don't tell me Gillis extrapolated the 2 points in 5 NHL games he registered a couple years ago and concluded that we picked up a defenceman who can score 30 points.

He's probably a signing for the Moose.

As far as I know, if a player is listed on a team's roster on NHL.com it's usually because they've been signed with that team.

Talent Analysis

Funk is considered a finesse defender, and his game is based on his solid skating ability. He has a long, fluid stride that gives him above average speed, along with a knack for ducking opposing checkers. He exhibits an accurate shot from the point, and passes the puck extremely well. A sound positional defender, he often uses his reach to poke check and pressure opponents. Funk has been criticized for shrinking from the spotlight and failing to better utilize his excellent size.

How long before people starting demanding Gillis's head and screaming about cap space and how FAIL this signing is? By what post do you think it'll happen? I'm betting post 45.

From his scouting report sounds like another Gillis player. Gillis definitely seems to have a type of player he covets. While I have complete faith in Gillis I'd just like point out the Canucks are in the business of winning hockey games, not chess games.

...Alright maybe post 16...

He played with Hansen in Portland and IIRC he was Coburn's D partner.

Guess he was dumped by the Sabres. There was a time when he was considered for the National Junior team and seen as a very good prospect. Real rangy player with good defensive coverage although not that physical.

Seemed to be out a lot of last year with I thin a shoulder problem

Definitely a Moose level signing which help make up for the gap of younger defensemen in the system.

I like this signing... the Canucks need more dmen that can play in the AHL and be called up without having to clear waivers... seems like Funk can play that role.

I hope we can add one more guy like this (preferably a RHS), that can play in Manitoba but is ready for call-up duty next season... would save the team from having to allocate cap space for 8 dmen on the main roster, if you can actually have some guys that can be called up that aren't waiver eligible.

4-5 guy for the Moose, I don't think we'll see him unless there's an injury epidemic on D or if Gillis thinks we'll lose one of the guys ahead of him on waivers. I like Rome more, he's got an offensive upside and toughness that Funk lacks.

Moose D looks finished now, aside from whatever Heisinger brings in, so hopefully we get an NHL D signing soon.

Sounds like a guy that could be a good project for Arniel and the Moose staff.
