Lawton said they'd upgrade the defense, that's been done. He said they would upgrade the bottom lines, this signing helps that. This offseason is the opposite of last offseason, it feels like there's a plan in place and those plans are being completed piece by piece. Still waiting for a backup, but there's plenty of time for that.
Exactly.

I like this signing after reading all about him and watching some video on him.

I also think it will be nice to see 19 on the back of a Lightning jersey again

I really dug that Youtube interview. Seems like a perfect fit under Toc's system. If you get enough players like that on the bench it makes it that much tougher for other guys to take a shift (or a night) off. I'm really liking this signing.

You act as if we don't need depth. Any signing that keeps us from having to use players like Segal, Bochenski, Konopka, etc is a good thing.

Veilleux had 13 goals and 23 points last year. Know which one of our 3rd/4th liners got that much? No a single one. Halpern came the closest to points with 16 and Pettinger had the most goals with 8. For a guy that's not known for putting up the numbers, right now he's an upgrade over a lot of guys.

It is the third and fourth line we need to improve, so make sense from that point of view.

I agree, but this was not a pressing need for this team right now. The only thing I can think of is that they will try to get rid of some of the higher priced dead weight(Arty maybe?).

Having production across all four lines is a pressing need.

Getting a top 6 winger and a backup goalie is more of a pressing need.

All of these things are important. I'm not huge on going out and spending on a top six winger at this point, because frankly, we're not at a point to compete yet, and i'd like to see if Downie can become that player under Tocchet (or even Tyrell).

Backup goaltender will happen, i'm not worried about that. Seeing more production and heart from our bottom lines is one of those things this team lacked. We had guys along for the ride and thats garbage, the bottom six is where you fill up with guys who have nothing to lose and will bleed for you.

I like this signing the more I get to know Veilleux.

Luckily there's no deadline to make trades or sign free agents.

This is conjecture, but I think Veilleux will wear 16. It's still too soon for many people to see a number 19.

26 and 4 are the only numbers I wouldn't re-issue.

I think there is enough time since Brian Bradley retired to give the number to Veilleux.

Yeah, but If Brad decides to come back next year and be our top 6 guy 19 should get striped from Veilleux's back and put on brad

Only way Brad comes back here is if he takes a huge paycut, i'm talkin 3.5-4 a year. Even then its a stretch unless hes moving to wing.

Richie isn't coming back. I kind of expect us to package 2 defenseman and a prospect for a goalie and a winger. Ottawa or Colorado perhaps? Budaj could back up Smitty and learn a few things in the process.

From Smitty? ****, learn from Raedar. Hell of a goaltending coach.
