Ryan Whitney vs Joni Pitkanen

Ryan Whitney 6'4 219 drafted 5th over all in 2002

Joni Pitkanen 6'3 202 drafted 4th over all in 2002

I will go with Joni. I think he is a better player, better speed, better playoff performer. Better!

Let it rip.

People don't realize how good is Pitkanen. He's top 25 defenceman in league and this season finally stars to play with his full potential. I'm verry happy to have this guy in Carolina.

Whitney is good player but he's nowhere to Pits defence game. But he's better in offensive part.

i'm quite impressed with how well Pitkanen played this year. He greatly improved defensively and had great playoffs too.

We all knew how talented he is but maturity was still a concern.

Pitkanen is a number one defenseman; Whitney is not.

I think if some of Pronger's toughness and defensive responsibility rubbed off on Whitney last year, he could be a top ten defenseman in the league sometime down the line.

For now, it's Pitkanen.

I swear only Oilers fans and now Canes fans will give him any credit for having a solid defensive game. Everyone just looked at his -25 the year the Flyers were by far the worst team in the league and tatoo'd that in their head. People also did it with Souray and even Visnovsky last season.

I think the Ducks may be able to improve Whitney's game this season.

Pitkanen was the #1 dman on a team that went to the Conference finals. Can anyone see a team with Whitney as their #1 going to the Conference finals? I can't.

I think they're pretty even. Both smooth operators, but very one-paced.

Does that also make Aaron Ward better than Whitney? and Pitkanen for that matter?

The Canes in 05-06, Hedican was the Cane's number 1 dman, and he was better than Whitney and possibly Pitkanen are now. He also wasn't their #1 guy in all situations like Pitkanen was this past year.

In the playoffs, Hedican averaged 22:40 per game, Ward had 21:42, Commodore 19:27, and Kaberle 18:25. Hedican was their #1 guy overall, Ward was their main PK guy, and Kaberle their main PP guy.

These past playoffs, Pitkanen averaged 26:29, Corvo 25:28, Seidenberg 22:25, Gleason 20:29, and the other guys barely played. Pitkanen was their #1 dman in basically all situations - Corvo had almost as many minutes, but was clearly playing for his offense. Pitkanen was also even, while Corvo was -7.

For what it is worth, Whitney is a great character in the locker room. Much the opposite of what we have heard about Pitkanen throughout his career.

This is true, but it seems Pitkanen has turned around his attitude in Carolina. And as long as he keeps it that way, he has the talent and the hockey smarts to blow Whitney out of the water.
