I guess I can only hope JR will decide to sign him in the end like he did with Cole and Larose....****.

I wouldn't mind Zherdov either, but if JR gets Ruutu signed, he will be happy with our offense. If any trade is done with Babs, he'll get a defensemen in return.

As Bleedgreen mentioned, the salaries just wouldn't work for us so I just can't see it happening. I wouldn't mind bringing him in though, but really I just don't see JR making a trade THAT big.

What would you guys think of something like this?

Zherdev, Korpikoski and a mid-level prospect for Ruutu and Babchuk? All four are RFAs, but the salaries should end up being fairly close to even.

Maybe, but I think he would probably waive it to play elsewhere.

I do not think Kaberle has a NTC.

I think that website is getting confused with the younger Kaberle. I've never heard Frank has a NTC. Plus, the only ones that get a NTC are if your name ends in W or you are Staal

Yeah, I don't think Frank has one. Here is a Luke article from after the playoffs in which he is talking about the defense.

Quote:
The Hurricanes no doubt will try to move Frantisek Kaberle and Niclas Wallin this summer, each with a year left on his contract, to free up payroll and get younger. However, Wallin has a no-trade clause, and the Hurricanes have been trying to trade Kaberle for a year.
Seems like if they both had a NTC he would have mentioned it instead of only naming Wallin.

Here is another article from last summer also talking about Wallin or Kaberle getting moved which mentions Wallin's NTC, but not Kaberle.

I actually asked Luke about Kaberle's NTC and he replied that he had no information and didn't believe Kaberle had NTC.

WRAL interview with JR today.

He seems pretty definitive about Babchuk not being back.

Interesting that he said that we're looking at two possible new defensemen, and that if we signed a second we'd be buying out Kaberle.

At this point, it seems like we're burying guys like Rodney, Carson, and Borer forever.

I wonder how that statement about Rodney having to play himself off the team is looking about now.

Would you be interested in a Babchuk for Zherdev swap?

I would add a good amount in return to secure a deal like that. And the truth would be that from a financial standpoint, we'd probably have to. Babchuk, Kaberle, and a 2nd next year for Zherdev. Send Kaberle to Hartford or let him depart for the KHL and call it a day.

Done and done. Any idea what Babchuk is asking for in his next contract? Zherdev is probably looking for 4M but will probably only get 3.6-3.8M from arbitration.

Edit: Adding the 2nd may even be overpayment for you guys. Zherdev will probably walk for free so Babchuk + Kabs is probably all it would take.

Well we're in the same situation with Babchuk and the difference in value is tremendous, IMO.

I think Babchuk would be fine with $1.75 to $2 million on a short term contract for a year or two. It would probably take a bit more than that to lock him up longer term but that would be a bit risky.

Any chance of something to include Ruutu on your end for Rozsival?

Zherdev + Rozsival for Babchuk, Tuomo Ruutu, Kaberle + (any additional salary dump)

Note: Rozsival has a $5 million cap hit, but actual salary of 6, 4, 3 over the next three years, which may be desirable if you're trying to keep the payroll under wraps.

Zherdev reminds me for Pitkanen. Tremendous talent but needs more time and place like Raleigh to find his game.

I doubt that Carolina would be able to justify moving Ruutu at this point, to be honest. If anything, Ruutu will play for his arbitration reward this upcoming season. We simply don't have enough grit in our Top 9 to justify moving any of it and Rozsival, while a very good defenseman in his own right, would give us too much of what we already have back there.

Carolina seems content to fill out the defense with what is left in free agency and picking up Zherdev would be enough to strain our budget even with Kaberle leaving with him.

I wanted Roszival before he signed that contract and before seeing him play last year. I saw at least a half dozen Rangers games where he was downright horrid. He and Redden were competing for worst defenseman in the universe title. I don't want to see Ruutu go and it seems like a deal would be worked out. Babchuk and Kaberle for Zherdev would be AMAZING. I doubt we could pull off a trade like that but it is JR and Slats so you really never know...

I wouldn't be in favor of the one involving Ruutu with Roszival coming our way. I think he just had a bad year, a REALLY bad year, but he's better then that to be sure. But he's also nowhere near worth his cap hit and is overpaid this year at 6 mil. That alone would decimate our budget and tie him with Staal for our highest paid player.

I do like the idea of acquiring Zherdev if we can clear salary but we'd also need to clear a winger spot in the process. That is unless they are planning for our lines to look like this next year:
Ruutu-Staal-Zherdev
Whitney-Cullen-Cole
Samsonov-Jokinen-LaRose
Eaves-Brind'Amour-Walker (most expensive 4th line EVER)

And we'd STILL need to find a top 4 defenseman somewhere.

rozsival and redden picked up their game at the end of the season and in the playoffs. i dont particularly like rosy's game but hes a good player. i think rozy and zherdev would be good value for babchuk, ruutu, kaberle. if u guys would like to add in a 3rd rounder we will gladly take it just like we did for cullen and turned that into grachev
