What's going on is that the league wants Ovechkin in an outdoor game. NBC doesn't think the Caps draw well enough for the Winter Classic. If they do it in Canada, NBC can go bleep themselves, and pick up the feed if they feel like it.

It gives Canada another outdoor game, which they have wanted, and the league gets Ovechkin in an outdoor game and lots of exposure.

"The indoor game at Olympic Stadium is expected to be contested on Nov. 28 or the previous Saturday to help commemorate the Canadiens’ centennial celebrations that will conclude on Dec. 5 with a match against the rival Boston Bruins at the Bell Centre. "

I'm confused too.

The 'outdoorsy' aspects of the Winter Classic/outdoor game phenomenon are much less important than getting 50,000+ in a building for a hockey game, and the box office take.

Ugh. That place was a complete dump when I was there 10 years ago. I can't imagine it's gotten any better.

Are the Caps going to wear Nationals Jerseys and the Habs Expos jerseys?

I'm almost positive the game would be played on regulation-sized NHL ice. Olympic Stadium was used primarily for baseball and football; it's not an Olympic hockey venue so there's no reason for the NHL to use a bigger ice surface.

Olympic Stadium originally had a retractable roof but it broke and was replaced with a permanent one (several times...). However, the current one is going to be replaced again and there were rumours in the past that the Canadiens game could be scheduled after the current one is removed but before the new one is installed. This might not be the case though -- the game could be played with the roof on which might disappoint some people, but it would also amplify the sound.

Boo. I absolutely love games the day after Thanksgiving...we've been lucky enough to have one 4 years in a row now. Move it to the 27th.

Yup. It will be regulation ice size, especially considering that this game is for two points.

It's a standard baseball stadium, seating 66,000, constructed for the 1976 Olympic Summer Games, with no ties to the Winter Olympics. If I remember correctly, I don't believe that it has ever hosted a hockey game. It has certainly never hosted an NHL game.

Like the previous outdoor venues, they will build a NHL-size rink on the field.

I loved going to the Big O for Expos games as a kid. Granted, the building has been a funding disaster for decades. I'm sure they'll give it some external spit and polish as best they can for the one day, though.

i'm sure they will use the baseball config with some temporary stands towards the outfield.

it has to be an apology for the Caps and a showcase to show that Ovechkin on a big stage game can be a draw.

Either way, I can't imagine what he would do infront of 60+ thousand people.

Tarik has an "update."

Quote:
Here's the latest on the possibility of the Caps facing the Canadiens at Olympic Stadium in Montreal on Nov. 28.

According to sources, the Caps will be in Montreal on that date. And the idea of playing at Olympic Stadium that day has been discussed. But those discussions are in the very, very preliminary stages.

There are always going to be haters when you're one of the best in the world. Small minded people can't be eliminated...unfortunately.

i think what's confusing to some of the habs fans is that these "exotic" venues like the european exhibition games and the two-year-old winter ...classic (wtf?) are bettman schemes to increase NHL hockey's visibility in new or stagnant markets. i don't think that's a problem in montreal.
