4 or even 5 Forward PP Units

With Kotalik being the monster he is on the point on the PP ( http://www.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp?hlp=8467502&fr=false for some footage ) and Higgins being a fantastic PP player, what do you guys think the chances are of us running a 4 forward, or *gasp* even 5 forward PP unit? We also have this guy named Gaborik who I hear is pretty good at shooting and stuff.

I could see

Kotalik and Rozsival at the Point
Drury, Higgins, and Gaborik as trigger men.

Seems fantastic to me.

If we were to run 5 forwards (won't happen) who would replace Rozsival? Dubinsky if he's playing hot? Zherdev?

I really like the prospect of our 1st PP unit though. Kotalik and Higgins could be considered PP specialists, Gaborik is Gaborik. Kotalik could influence Rozsival to unleash his monster from the point as well. And Drury was our best PP player last year. The PP, and our special teams in general, might be the highpoint of next season.

I Spoke to a Buffalo fan said Kotalik was necessarliy good on the point but more so on the wing of a PP.

4 man is possible but no way in hell are we doing a 5 man. Rozsival is a machine when he wants to be and Tortorella made it blatantly obvious that he intends on making Staal and Girardi much more involved this year. Add Wade Redden and possibly 1 of Gilroy and Sanguinetti and there is simply no way that our defense won't be on the PP.

Totally agree. However, I COULD see a 5 forward PP in 5-on-3 situations with Kotalik and Drury at the points.

Either way, I think our PP has to improve.. I mean it can't get much worse....... right?

Who would be the forwards in that case? Gaborik obviously, but then...? Dubinsky? Anisimov? Callahan? I don't really see that as an upgrade over our defensemen. The only time I could see it ever happening if it's a scenario where we are down by a goal with a minute left in the game or something to that extent.

Agreed. Just saying it was possible and it could happen in 5-on-3 situations and/or when we really need a goal.

Did Torts ever run 4-5 forwards out there when he was in Tampa? Kotalik has one, very devastating, very obvious weapon. I hope to high hell that Torts recognizes it and uses it properly. His shot plus big bodies in front (Brashear/Boyle/Voros) should mean a very good, if not lethal, PP.

I hope that none of those 3 are on the PP. Voros was a disaster on the PP. It doesn't matter if you're 7 feet tall if you have no idea what you're doing. Meanwhile a guy like Adam Graves, at only 6 feet, made a career out of standing in front of the net. I'd rather give that job to Dubinsky and Drury. Neither is ideal but they both are willing to take punishment, have solid hands, and are good at finding rebounds.

In looking at his highlight reel on NHL.com, he probably had more one-timer PP goals on shots from the point than the entire Ranger team last year. Rosie needs to watch and learn and do the same.

IMO Torts will run a 4 forward PP unit. Kotalik should be on the left and a d-man should be on the right. Most likely something like Higgins-Drury-Gaborik as the forwards.

Higgins-Drury-Gaborik
Kotalik-Rozsival/Redden/Girardi/Gilroy

The power play will suck. Just like always. I'll be shocked/thrilled if we finish in the top half of the league. Absolutely shocked. That Rangers sweater and the Garden crowd are like kryptonite to an NHL power play.

Just watched some of Kotalik's goals from the above link. I remember that wicked wrister against us in the SO up in Buffalo. Should be a nice addition!

Ehh, the PP was ranked as high as 8th in the league as recently as the 2006 season.

I'm excited to see that bomb from the point, obviously there have been several things wrong with the Rangers PP recently but that was the biggest issue.

I wouldn't mind seeing

Higgins-Drury-Gaborik

Kotalik-Redden

If Redden's game is on he has a good point shot, Drury even tho small is a battler in front the guy does good there.

I'd think a 5 foward PP would put Drury on the point wouldn't it?

I feel like that experiment failed in epic fasion last season so i'd pass

That being said, I'll be very happy with a power play that is just functional and doesn't make me wish this was the NFL where we could "decline" penalties

Ad it could be excellent this year too - we have a great 1st line RW again!

am i the only one who was thinking that Prucha would have been perfect for this role? He scored so much on the powerplay by hanging around the net and banging in the rebounds of Jarg and co. I feel like he would have been a great on a powerplay with Gabby being awesome and Kotalik firing pucks on the net

we could have 4 or even 5 forwards on the PP, potentially. We look monstrous on paper but we have to do it on the ice. We got alot of fast, young, sniper kids who are really going to help.
