Canes sign Angelidis, Fitzgerald

Canes link.

2 way deals.

Quote:
Fitzgerald, 24, joins the Carolina organization after playing the entire 2008-09 season with Manitoba of the AHL. The Two Harbors, MN, last season led the Moose with 209 penalty minutes, and ranked third among team defensemen with a plus-13 plus/minus rating, despite playing in just 56 of 80 games.

Decent moves to help out the rats.

Wish we still had Petruzalek, though. Even without him they're a contender, but adding a player like that would make them even better. Gotta wonder if they'll add an enforcer with Gillies being gone or if they're expecting Conboy to be around. Maybe they'll let Olson start to fight more, too.

adds (well keeps in Angelidis's part) more toughness for the AHL team. We could definitely use a REAL enforcer down there though. I wonder if they're going to have Kennedy down there this year or if they're going to let him play one more year in the OHL.

Albany can always contract a fighter themselves and have him patrol down there. Heck, that's how a lot of AHL fighters eat.

I've been a big FitzGerald fan since his Seattle days. During his Junior days he was one of the toughest in the WHL and was a good all around defenseman. He's a leader, good teammate, and consistently works to improve his game. Probably destined to be a AHL defenseman for the rest of his career, but I still think there's a chance he could turn into a NHL bottom pairing guy. FitzGerald has always been one of my favorites and should be a good piece in your organization.

Was curious as to why he signed with Lukko instead of remaining in the Carolina organization. It seems that, despite their decent performance in the playoffs, there was a lack of depth among the forwards in Raleigh last year. Does he have some shortcoming that keeps him from cracking the lineup with the Hurricanes?

His problem is that he's about 5-9 and 175 lbs., he isn't a great defensive player, and in a 4th line role he's essentially useless.

Petruzalek needs to be playing in a Top 9 role in order to have success in the NHL and down the middle, we're pretty locked up there with Staal, Cullen, and Brind'Amour.

Perhaps some time abroad will do him well. We still retain his rights unless i'm mistaken. He could come back as a good 3rd line guy.
